Yes, more congratulations on that little pinky Tate. Very cute AND pink. Smiling

Tim, it is amazing the pinks that are coming out in this cooler weather. Very nice photos.

Jo Ann, today I moved a bunch of the seedlings out of the pink seedling bed. Gave the wee one more room to see what she will do through this winter and on into next spring. Keeping fingers crossed.

I don't know how many of you grow 'Slabber's seedling' but I bought it several years ago from Fernwood Nursery because it was supposed to be pink. The first year I saw nothing resembling pink but since then it has showed pink as a mature specimen. Oddly the pink is mostly on the very mature, almost senescing leaves at the edge of the rosette. These turn a very bright pink and are raised up in the clump, making for a different effect. This year I had blooms on it and made a bunch of crosses to other pinkish plants. It is a very good grower and shows no winter damage, two other things I favor as a parent.

It sure is Kevin. I took that photo in May 2014. Can you get us a September photo?

Here it is! Sorry about the sun! You see the older leaves are quite pinkish. I'll be interested to see what the seedlings are. I crossed a couple to 'Nico' to see if I couldn't enhance this coloration.

Why 'Nico'? Are you trying to get a pinker 'Nico'? I could understand that... mine was pretty dull most of the year. Is there something about 'Nico' that makes it a desirable parent?

Tim,

My Nico was pretty good all year but mine is in a lot of sun. I like the rosette shape too.

Nico has darker leaf tips and quite red so it was a similar pattern to the pink in Slabber's seedling. Not many semps have it in that pattern. Also crossed Nico with Fire Glint and Roasted Chestnuts for more with intense tip colors. Would have used Fernwood too but it didn't bloom. Next year for sure.

Had a very interesting seedling from Roasted Chestnuts X Jungle Shadows that is sort of a very large, much more pointed leaved, and better color retention version of Roasted Chestnut that inspired these other crosses. That one has very good color retention (even now) and makes very neat clumps.

Hope that helps! I had done lots of really big purples the last couple years so wanted to do something different. Sometimes you have to have the imagination of an artist and the genetic knowledge combined in one to get just what you want. Of course even with that, I often get surprises (good and bad!).

That does answer my question, Kevin. I guess it's a tale of two Nicos. Mine doesn't look anything like Lynn's picture and I must consider the possibility that it is misidentified. I got it from PO under a different name, then Cynda emailed me telling me it was actually 'Nico'. I returned a picture to her and she confirmed it was 'Nico' but who can say for sure.

My 'Nico' is looking its best right now as in the second picture, which is not bad but has shown no pink/red until September. Although looking back to a March picture tells a completely different story. I guess that's why we take pictures instead of relying on memory. Looking at the first picture, from March, does look alot more like what I'd expect from 'Nico'. I'll remember to take a look next Spring.

'Nico' in March and September.

Tim,

Mine looks more like Lynn's photo and year round. Remind me and I'll give you a start of mine. It came from Fernwood in '13 and has grown nicely despite being mistreated by customs!

Anyway, I'm glad you found my answer helpful. I do like those sort of back of the leaf with intense cool colors as a different look. We'll see how this sorts out in the crosses. Roasted Chestnuts was from seed sent by Erwin Geiger so I don't know the pedigree of it. I self pollinated a bunch in '15 and have ~40 seedlings from that. They are a variable bunch from strongly-tipped progeny to red and red-purple solid colors. That gives me more of a clue as to what sort of genetics are behind this plant. Slabber's seedling is also a big ?? as to heredity. There are some selfed seed as well as some crosses.

I'll try to get a photo of my 'Nico' tomorrow. I think both Tim and I have the same plant.
