LizinElizabeth said:It'll be interesting to see how it does in a warmer zone. Have any of you had good growth on any of the yellow herbaceous peonies? I think I lost Gold Mine this year, barely had any growth this spring, decided to move it since it was pretty crowded and the root wasn't as firm as I'd like....I replanted it but think it's a lost cause.

Liz, I do have Goldilocks, planted in December 2012, it bloomed in 2014 for the 1st time. It has had decent leaf growth, but it is presently going dormant, and looking pretty ugly right now. I also have Lois' Choice, also planted in December 2012, and it continues to increase in size each year. I'll be interested to see how well my new Sunny Girl will do in my area.

LG, your Swenson's roots look wonderful! I'm also really pleased with the size roots that I received from them.

Thank you ladies! In springtime, I go around looking for nurseries with peonies then I go back in the fall. I found FA last Friday and the day they marked up their plants at 75% off. After this post, I will be leaving to go to another nursery which has tree peonies. Wish me luck! Smiling

There is one tree peony left and it was Hanakisoi. I did not take it as I already have it. There are a few pots of herbaceous and Theatrical and Lake of Silver are kind of new to me. I did not buy any. Tomorrow, I will go to another one.

I wish I got the money and I will buy them both. They are not marked down and the nursery has no plan because they are already in the hoop house, not outside on sale area. They have some TPs but are only stick and has no name, just color of the blooms in the pics.

How deep should I plant my bare root peonies in zone 5?

Thank You! Thank You! Tracey do you also dig your hole fairly deep and amend the soil, then put non-fertilized dirt on top of that before planting? Do you made a mound in the middle like you would for daylilies?

I dig the hole generously so that as the roots acclimate, the roots have looser soil in which to settle in. I don't mound the dirt, I plant the eyes 1 inch below soil surface. And then water it in. I plant with bulb fertilizer mixed in and if your soil is heavy or doesn't drain well, amending with organic matter can be helpful.
