Just started planting bulbs this week.
Today planted 60 Orange Landscape tulips and 36 King Alfred type daffodils.
Did a pack of blue and white crocus earlier in the week.
This year I am covering all the bulb plantings with open lattice plant trays to discourage the squirrels.

I love autumn. Season of bulb planting and the lovely sweet, fungi/mouldy, wet smells of decay that fill the air I've ordered - again after last year's autumn bulb fiasco - some new bulbs this year too. Hope they'll arrive next week, though I shall not be planting them until atleast next month. I've heard that late planting discourages disease.

Anyway, they are:






Tulipa tarda, T. turkestanica, T. urumiensis, T. polychroma , T. humilis albo coerulea oculata and T. clusiana stellata (of which I have no picture)

The beds they'll go in. I've added more sand and gravel in hopes of getting more drainage. If proven insufficient, well then just ***** it




Besides that I've also ordered 1 Eremurus himalaicus, just to try and see if I can grow it, and some more Camassia leichtlinii alba (last years' I trashed after they got infected)

Looks as if you will have a nice display next spring!
You are in a warmer zone so I can understand waiting to plant.
Here we have to get them in early before the ground freezes.
Daffodils, especially, need a longer rooting period of several weeks in the fall.
Tulips can be planted later, as they only require about one week or ten days of fall rooting.
But I am planting all the varieties now, as I layer the daffodil bulbs over the tulip bulbs as I plant them. The squirrels love the tulip bulbs, but not the daffodil bulbs.

hi just got lots of bulbs and started to plant before cold and wet weather begins got the normal
daffs/tulips/fritillaria/crocus/ alliums for next spring etc and some new ones lachenalia (cape primrose) ronina/rosabeth and rupert anyone grown these i live in north west uk going to try them in the conservatory anyone grown them in there do i need heat

Bulbs need a cold winter in order to bloom in the spring.
It sounds like a good selection there.
Keep us posted and take pictures of your plantings.

Lee Roy, those are great tulip choices! I love the species.

I grow lachenalia in the basement under fluorescent lights. They certainly 'lite up the basement' when flowering. The average temp hovers around 60°.

hi thanks i will bring them into the house very soon they growing already i pushed the soil aside and there was loads of roots, this an experiment for me :cross_finger:

got hyacinths in the dark ready for christmas and paperwhites as well
hope to get some dwarf daffs in tomorrow, bit late but i will plant them up
i love christmas bulbs, poisettia plants are good and amaryllis as well
hoping orchids will flower then, do you all do the same ?

Just found out mine shipped! 200 Tulip Humilis Violacea , 200 Crocus Tommies ,100 Snowdrops , I'm going to be busy!

hi whow thats a lovely colour (cape primrose) afraid my family wont allow my bulbs in the fridge only got one and its full i love trying something new found a bulb specialist in south of england so im trying out different ones. i just been buying loads of bulbs from wilkinson have to get my containers out give them a wash and get them planted

I've got 163 bulbs ordered from Brent and Becky's and John Scheepers, most are to force.
5 kinds of tulips (35 total)
17 different daffodils (100 total)
20 paperwhites
3 Amaryllis
and some alliums for outside.
Using 6" pots at 5 bulbs per pot gives me 7 pots of tulip and 20 of daffodil, totaling 27 pots; refrigerator capacity is 30.

I've yet to get some hyacinths, probably from Old House Gardens or maybe locally. Usually forced in water, they go in the refrigerator door

What variety of amaryllis did you order?

J, those look great, the Lemon Sorbet is really intriguing I've never seen a yellow one. I was thinking about double dream for next year.

Species tulips that I am trying this year are:
Dasystemon Tarda
eicherli
clusiana
Praestans Shogun
pulchella
The garden centers call them "botanical tulips".
They are going out on a dry south slope,
with traction sand in the bottom of the holes so
the drainage is good.

I wish I could do a large area of Tulips. The rabbits and deer love them too much. I grow them in pots and use them on the patio.

Sounds like an ideal slope for tulips, Caroline! Some of the species tulips we tried naturalizing here refused to bloom, probably because our summers are too cool for them and while I don't remember all their names, I do know that many survived for many years, even after the deer became a problem. Tarda I do remember and that is one strong bulb, capable of surviving, spreading and blooming for many years totally without care.

I tried Praestans 'Shogun' for the first time last year and really loved the very warm yellow-orange color. It produces surprisingly many good sized flowers from its rather small bulbs!
