My Rose Society friends in town got their Edmunds catalog yesterday but I still don't have one. I went ahead and asked Edmunds for another one. Silly, because they give until Feb to order and get the shipping discount. Don't know why I'm so impatient.
I want to put in an order with Austin for spring delivery. Austin roses do soooo well for me, and the 2 nurseries around me who carry them charge $25-$30 for them. Cheaper to pay shipping and buy direct. There's some that I can only find from Austin, also. I think he holds some back. Jubilee Celebration is one I've wanted for a while. Toni, is that one you can get locally too? I'm so jealous of your great nurseries. How much do they charge for most roses in your area?

I saw Jubilee Celebration at Paulinos Gardens last year. I don't do that good w/Austins, but doesn't mean I don't like to oogle! Roses at Tagawa Gardens are usually between $36.99/$39.99 but I get a 20% "Grey Kitty" discount. Paulinos are usually $24.99 from May 1st through Mother's Day, then up to $29.99. I haven't lost a single Paulinos because they're not really hot-house grown, they're semi-outdoor grown in peat pots. Tagawas have to be hardened because they're 100% hothouse grown. Those that I have managed to keep for a year have done marvelously.. it's just getting them through their first summer. They're very very thirsty roses compared to everyone else. Here's a video from this year's "Wines & Roses" mob from Tagawa's site:

Jubilee Celebration is hard to find, so if Austin carries it, that's the place to order. Austin also still seems to have an exclusive lock on Lady of Shalott. Even Hortico doesn't have it yet.

Jubilee Celebration is also a little harder to grow than the average Austin, so it's possible that other nurseries stopped carrying it for that reason. For one thing, it's one of the few Austin roses that aren't hardy to zone 5. Most of the Austin roses are hardy to zone 5 and some can even be grown without protection in zone 4, but there are a few more delicate darlings that need zone 6 or higher.

Oh! Good info to know! Lady of Shalott is another one I wanted.
We're considered zone 7 but last winter we had a few nights that went down to 17 below, with no snow cover. It hasn't been that cold in many years, though. Even parts of central oklahoma were that cold last year.
The Austins made it through the winter better than some of my Bucks. All were grown the same...i.e., equally neglected.

Yeah, and we had 52 days over 100 this summer, with many above 110. Tough climate. My oldest daughter just moved to San Diego because she hates the climate here so much. She brought a new boyfriend back here last weekend and he complained that it was too cold...he's from Miami Fla. She told him October is our best month...good as it gets. Glare
She called today asking if mums will grow in San Diego, wants me to send her some cuttings. Anyone know?

That's grim!

Ask her when the rainy season starts down there. I've pretty much given up on mums because they start blooming just in time for the rain to wreck them.

Zuzu - -17 is cold. Yes. I admit that's cold. Anything colder than -7 (that's when boogers freeze in your nose) is cold. Where I used to live in NNY, that'd be the HIGH for the day. LOLLLLLLLLLLL Last night it got down (officially) to about 17 degs. Didn't feel that bad when I left the gym at 930 wearing just a medium jacket, sweat pants, t-shirt, & tennys.

Cindi - The big boxes aren't carrying mums there? I'd personally have her talk to a nursery first to see if they'd grow. I *think* they need a cold snap in order to bloom. I know that my asters do & I believe asters & mums are related.

Oh, I hate these stupid people who make up their own names for roses. I ordered Lady Ashe because it looked so intriguing. No wonder it appealed to me. I already have three of it under its real name: Dixieland Linda.

Thanks for the response on mums, Toni and Zuzu. Rainy season has started in San Diego for sure! My daughter texted photos of her dogs playing in rain puddles. They were so excited to see rain, after living in Vegas for 2 years!
My aircard broke and internet withdrawal has been tough. Good thing I found a library with a free computer...got a new aircard ordered. Hopefully soon I'll be back online. whew. Missed reading what everyone's up to, but I think I saved some money not seeing all the pretty flower pics. Lovey dubby

Cindi - What carrier are you using for your aircard? I have an extra AT&T aircard you can borrow if you need. Smiling You'd just have to put in your SIM card.

Stuck with #$%^& Sprint for another year. Thanks anyway! You are so generous! I ordered a new aircard on ebay from Cargo Largo for $10, since Sprint wanted to charge me $254 for a new one...and then they suggested I buy insurance and walk out and back in and file a claim and pay the $50 copay, but I thought that sounded kinda unethical. Anyway once I got my first replacement from Cargo Largo, I took it in to sprint to be activated and they said it was listed as "Lost or Stolen"! so I had to send it back and buy another one. Grumbling
Still waiting on that one. Crying
Very frustrating because I have no other options other than going into town to use the library computers. We are 1 mile beyond where cable stops, and for some reason my laptop stopped picking up wi-fi while in town. And we don't have a land line at all... Sticking tongue out My phone's internet is sooo sluggish...you would think Android would work better, but even when it does work, it's hard to see the tiny print, and I always end up opening a link when I try to enlarge the screen. That parts is my problem...clumbsy fingers, old eyes.
I think I'll be watching the Black Friday ads for a new computer! I'm hoping for a computer/tv combination so I can really enlarge screens! Wouldn't it be cool to look at rose pics on a 55" HD screen? Which is about all I would use it for since I don't like watching tv...

I tip my hat to you. Hurray! Lovey dubby Lovey dubby Thank you Toni! Lovey dubby
Edmunds' website is up and running now. My internet shut down twice while I was browsing, but Edmunds saved what I had placed in the basket. After much painful decision making, I narrowed it down to 5.
I'm getting:
Twilight Zone
Music Box
Sheila's Perfume (a replacement for a diseased one I bought locally)
Big Momma
Whimsy

I'm betting that my new Koko Loco and Ketchup and Mustard do make it through the winter. It was real tempting to order both just in case, but I am trying to be an optimist.
I really wanted another Stephens' Big Purple and Sunsprite, but I think I can find them locally. Sunsprite was still blooming in November here.
We have snow on the ground today, first time this winter. My dogs exhausted themselves chasing and eating snowballs that I threw at them. They really love digging in the snow, throwing it all over each other. A mere 2" of white stuff took all the drab ugliness out of the yard, makes it beautiful.

Did anyone else put in an order on this Edmunds sale? Toni, what all did you get?

Cindi - I didn't have a catalog (I shredded mine a while back) 'cuz I use the internet almost 100% .. so I had no idea what I was going to get other than Twilight something-or-another, Music Box, & Sparkle & Shine. Those were the only ones I could remember. I'm hoping to find a Big Momma locally as I'm not really all that into pink roses, but I had to get one of those Music Boxes. I know I can get SugarMoon, K&M, & Bullseye locally.

The prices on this sale make them cheaper than anything I can get locally. It was hard to resist ordering a lot more!
And believe me, the local nurseries get plenty of my money...not feeling too guilty about buying these online.

My order from Edmunds' Roses will be arriving any day now. They were shipped to me last week. The shipment includes Cinnamon Dolce, All a'Twitter, Music Box, Whimsy, Raspberry Cream Twirl, and Lady Ashe. I also bought a Clematis from them to see how well they handle plants other than roses.

I'd be happier about Lady Ashe if Edmunds' hadn't pulled a fast one worthy of J&P: It turns out to be Dixieland Linda, which was renamed Lady Ashe when it was made part of the Biltmore Collection. I already have more than one Dixieland Linda, and I'd be delighted to find a grafted one, but the Biltmore roses are own-root plants, so I don't expect this one to be any more vigorous than the ones I bought from Vintage Gardens.

When you start posting your new Twilight Zone photos this year, don't be confused by the double listing. We have two Twilight Zone roses in our database. To make matters worse, both are listed as mauve-blend grandifloras. The one you're buying this year, though, is much darker than the older one, which is lavender with a cream reverse.

Zuzu, did Edmunds send you a notice about shipping? Did you pay extra for the notice, or did you request a date?
Please post a photo of the roses when they arrive! I'm really interested in seeing how different companies compare. Where is that thread where you asked people to show shipments? Was that here or cubits?
Edit: Ohhhh found your blog, found the pictures. Really appreciate all the info you put in there about the different orders!

Yes, Cindi, they sent a notice last Friday that the package had been shipped, and the roses arrived on Wednesday. That's enough notice, I think. I didn't pay extra for the notice or even request it, so it must be common policy now.

I didn't request a date. They go solely by USDA growing zones, I believe.

I don't think I ever had a thread asking people to show shipments, but I could be mistaken. Are you thinking of Polly's threads in the Clematis cubit and in the DG Clematis forum?
