Here is the shelf project. He will have a couple of 6 inch ones that I will be able to put my big ziplock bags of flour and sugar on so I won't have to dig through my boxes. The transport boxes can go up in the loft after we get there. He has also devised a better place for the litterbox for the kitties when we go to Texas. We don't use that back bathroom, so he put a cover over the tub and the box will go on top of that. He's made 2 "steps" for them to walk up because it is way too high, even for a cat. LOL

Bonehead said:Any input re tent trailers? We are thinking of selling our Class C and downsizing. I've found I don't care much for winter camping - the only logical way to go is south and then we're in the desert which I've seen enough of. And camping during the summer isn't a big draw for me either - too crowded. When I looked back through our trip photos, my favorites were renting cabins/houses. We tried that driving our car, but ended up at motels more often than I would like. I wouldn't be opposed to pulling a compact bed on wheels for one-night stays while traveling from one spot to the next, thinking we could then plan ahead a bit better and reserve cabins for a week or so at a time. The key word is 'planning' which I suck at...

I've never even looked inside a tent-trailer, and am wondering how tricky they are to set up. Wondering if there are any with a one-bed floor plan - we have zero use for a 2nd bed and that space could be much better used for either storage or more comfy seating.

I had a 93 starcraft tent trailer. In hind sight, I should have bought a teardrop instead LOL. It is easy to set up, I did it many times solo. Mine had a queen bed on one side and a full bed on the other. Dinette seating in the center that converted into another bed (not needed) sink and stove inside (never used). The full size bed worked great for holding my dogs crates. They slept there to balance out the weight LOL.
The downfall I had with tent trailer is if it rained...or even heavy dew while camping. When you get home you have to pop up the trailer again and wait for the tent to dry out before closing it back up again or you got mold on the tent. I lived in the mountains so dew/rain was often...even at home. There were times I had the trailer popped up for several weeks waiting for a sunny day to dry it.
The best part about it was it was always packed and ready to go including can foods, cooking and camping gear. All I had to do is fill a cooler with perishables and hook up the trailer and go. Made camping on a whim (without planning ahead) pretty easy.
They are super easy to tow and hitch up. They are light so if you miss your mark on the hitch, just pick the trailer up and move it over a bit LOL

Anna.. those shelves look handy. How do they attach? I am afraid to nail or drill ..whats behind the walls might be important!

Deb, I have not experienced a tent trailer, but it sounds like it may meet your needs
Could you rent one to see if it works in reality?

Our class B functions that way for short stays. 20 mpg too. We have no trouble finding parking 95% of the time

I'm also considering either a Class B or conversion van. Basically we just need a bed and a few amenities for overnight stays. Our 26' Class C is very nice, but just too big for our needs. I feel like a rolling motel going down the road!

Gee, I wish you lived close you could take ours and try it on for size.

I will say this, if you look for a B ..get a twin bed ..the queen is nice but it fills the space side to side and it aint fun crawling into or getting out . But it works very well for overnights and such.

Rosie, he had to attach the slat board with screws, but he didn't have any trouble finding the "supports" in the wall to screw them to. The hangers just tip and slide in, and the boards sit on the hangers. I don't think he is going to fasten them down; really no need to when there won't be anything on them when we are on the road.

Counter space at a PREMIUM when I cook I have the quart inseets which close up the sink opening ....but those are a pain and then the sink is not available

The Spousal Unit took the RV down to the dealership this morning; he had to have it there by 8 am. He noticed that the slideout in the living room seemed to be "uneven", for lack of a better description. Luckily they were able to fix it there and it doesn't have to go back to the factory for a replacement. That would have been horrid. And it cost him less than $200.00, so all is well.

He's been "making improvements/additions" with shelves, etc. I had to make some curtains to hide a couple of those shelves. Gadfrey-zeke...........what a PITA to get those made. But, I got them finished without screwing anything up, so it's all good.

Don't know when we will be able to get out again......I know for sure the last weekend of July. There is a HUGE fireworks show we help with up in Plover, WI. It's just a little bit south of Stevens Point if any of you care to look it up. We'll go up Friday afternoon after I get off of work as they start putting some stuff up already Friday so we don't have SO much to do on Saturday. The head cheese of all that in Plover is nice enough to allow us to park the truck and RV just inside the park so we don't have to get a hotel room. We did it the first time last year and it worked out really good for us. DS#1 and his wife stayed with us too. At least this year I know he'll take fresh water so we can shower. He didn't know the condition of the roads; he figured if they were as bad as what we had been on 2 weeks before that where we lost the spare tire for the RV because it was so rough, he was NOT going to put 100 gallons of water in the tank. Can't blame him.

We'll have to leave Plover at the crack of dawn Sunday morning because we are heading to Indiana to the MoRyde factory. He's getting a decent suspension put under it to help with holding the whole thing together on the aforementioned rough roads. The factory is in Indiana; we have to be there at 6 Monday morning. It's a 3 day job. We can stay in it at night, which will help. We won't be too far from a bunch of those Indiana attractions; Nappanee, Shipshawana, etc. so we'll probably do some touristy things for those 3 days. Might take in a show at the theater at Amish Acres. They do a nice job there.

August 10-16th we're off to the Pyrotechnics Guild International (PGI) convention in Gillette, Wyoming. That will be fun too.

Well, we took Step One to our next camping venture. Bought a brand spanking new pickup. Smallish, blue, 4-doors, short bed. Step Two will be to clean out and put our Class C on the market (amazing how much 'stuff' we have in there...). It has about 36K miles on it, runs good, real clean, and well maintained so hopefully we can get close to what we paid for. Step Three will be an extended road trip in the pickup with PRE-PLANNED (this is the key...) stays along the way. My thought is drive about 3 hours to a specific destination, then stay for 3-4 days, and repeat. The disadvantage will be the lack of spontenaity we are accustomed to, but I think the advantage of knowing there is a pre-arranged cabin waiting for us will work well. I will miss having a bed-on-wheels, but on the other hand, I find that close-in cordwood camping holds little appeal for me.

This, of course, may all change...who knows...

The first long trip I'm thinking about is up the Al-Can Highway. Unfortunately we're hosting a wedding this summer, so likely we wouldn't do this until next spring/summer. In the meanwhile, there are lots of lovely rental cabins locally. That may be a good way to see how this plan might work (or not) for us.

Sounds good ..and no black tank.. and no hitting knees when making bed! That black tank stuff still shakes me up and the frifge takes too long to cool down!

The downside to what you are doing ( for us maybe not for you two ) is that when we book for a few days...inevitably I an ready to go on to the next sooner ... i needed to do homework more to be sure there was enough to keep interest going.

I LOVE that new car smell! Best of luck with it Deb

Here is a museum I will get to within the next few years, old camping trailers and vehicles fascinate me.
Sharon's sister bought was a 1970s version of the 1955 Spartan Imperial Mansion Mobile Home.
It was in near off the dealer lot shape and they paid twenty five hundred for and then sold it for twice that much.
I have no love for large trailers but even with the profit I think they were dorks for selling it; it was truly a sweet trailer on the inside.
https://autonxt.net/fascinatin...

I would LOVE to have one of the units from the thirties but would jerry-rig a fuel injection set-up for the engine so I could go up mountain roads at over 20 mph.

Yeah, yeah, RpR, I know you hate us and those of our ilk. Sorry, but I am NOT going to spend 4 months full time in a 19 foot travel trailer with the Spousal Unit and 3 cats. I need a little space to myself.

There is a campground in St Augustine... they have some refurbished old airstreams for rent.. cant be taken off the property. Just rent to camp. I have not gone inside.

Speaking of mountains... we stopped for gas (diesel) and I forget how it was described ... maybe as less polluting .. the hubby would know, but can't ask him now. He said that he fears the stations will all be compelled to move to it for thecenvironment. Normally, our motor home has NO issues climbing on mountain roads... it is diesel.. and gets 22 mpg.. 24 feet long .. mercedes engine .. Sprinter body .. (Thats all I know) but anyway ..we go everywhere with it in the NC mtns. It handles like a car. We put that fuel in it and forget it!! It struggled the entire time. NO PEP. . Finally it was time for another fill up after driving all over on a studio art tour ...2 days worth... we filled up with the "regular stuff" and the RV took off once again like a rocket!
