Bonehead said:Any input re tent trailers? We are thinking of selling our Class C and downsizing. I've found I don't care much for winter camping - the only logical way to go is south and then we're in the desert which I've seen enough of. And camping during the summer isn't a big draw for me either - too crowded. When I looked back through our trip photos, my favorites were renting cabins/houses. We tried that driving our car, but ended up at motels more often than I would like. I wouldn't be opposed to pulling a compact bed on wheels for one-night stays while traveling from one spot to the next, thinking we could then plan ahead a bit better and reserve cabins for a week or so at a time. The key word is 'planning' which I suck at...
I've never even looked inside a tent-trailer, and am wondering how tricky they are to set up. Wondering if there are any with a one-bed floor plan - we have zero use for a 2nd bed and that space could be much better used for either storage or more comfy seating.
I had a 93 starcraft tent trailer. In hind sight, I should have bought a teardrop instead LOL. It is easy to set up, I did it many times solo. Mine had a queen bed on one side and a full bed on the other. Dinette seating in the center that converted into another bed (not needed) sink and stove inside (never used). The full size bed worked great for holding my dogs crates. They slept there to balance out the weight LOL.
The downfall I had with tent trailer is if it rained...or even heavy dew while camping. When you get home you have to pop up the trailer again and wait for the tent to dry out before closing it back up again or you got mold on the tent. I lived in the mountains so dew/rain was often...even at home. There were times I had the trailer popped up for several weeks waiting for a sunny day to dry it.
The best part about it was it was always packed and ready to go including can foods, cooking and camping gear. All I had to do is fill a cooler with perishables and hook up the trailer and go. Made camping on a whim (without planning ahead) pretty easy.
They are super easy to tow and hitch up. They are light so if you miss your mark on the hitch, just pick the trailer up and move it over a bit LOL
