Lilli, Sharlene, Les Iris de Laymont are taking orders from now (last year they opened for orders in July). The newer ones are in limited numbers, so if you're interested you might like to check them out. I put in an order this morning, and there were already a few I wanted that were not available. I ordered mostly Piateks and Tasquiers, a few others.

They've also increased their prices a bit... Sad But the rhizomes they sent me this year were all great - big, fresh, several doubles or even triples.

Question: I have seen you all post that Tom Burseen is introducing at some of the vendor web sites. Do you know if he is still going to do mail order as well?

My understanding is that he wanted to focus on hybridizing and not selling, but if you have ordered before Elsa you can always write him and see if he has any. Most of his newer plants have been transferred to the introducing vendors.

I won a few on the Beaumont Ridge Iris auction last. If you haven't received from Mr. Metler yet, I highly suggest you try. You will be beyond impressed with his rhizomes quality.

Rob, I tried to win you a Tuscan Summer, but lost out, sowwy.

Here's just one I won. I cannot take credit for this photo, but I was sold on the pic he posted with his mother holding up a show stalk.

Nice one, Gabe! I took a look at the auction and there certainly were some beauties offered!
I got distracted and didn't bid - ( a friend who is collecting items for the homeless was stopping by to pick up a box from me). So I missed out.

That's a lovely iris, Gabe - it looks huge (unless the mother is really, really tiny!) That colour would be a wonderful foil to all sorts of paler blooms. Thumbs up

The branching caught my eye the most. Luckily there will be more available later in the season Hurray!

I noticed the lush branching also...but I'd heard that having all the buds in bloom at once wasn't so desirable. Can this be right? The iris that got Best in show, My Beloved, at our iris club, had multiple blooms, What do the judges say?

...and doesn't Timothy's sweet-faced mother look like someone you'd like to know!

I guess the downside is that if all the buds bloom together, the overall period of bloom will be shorter? But the impact is amazing! Of course I'm not a judge....

That one is a beauty. I like the good branching too. Ones that bloom with show stalks are more likely to win best of show I remember reading somewhere. They need to bloom at least two weeks in the garden, but I prefer longer garden blooms.

The number of blooms is not supposed to influence judging. As a matter of fact, more blooms open means the is a greater chance that the judge will find a flaw, thus making the bloom stalk NOT best in show

Although I am not a judge but have had many hours of judges training, there is also the issue of the flowers touching the stalk which is not desirable. Judges can be ruthless. I prefer pretty to perfect form so never did finalize my judges credentials.

I saw your name, Gabriel, as the winner of several beauties!

I took a look at their website and I am happy that they don't ship to the US! I would go bankrupt on the Mego and Piatek irises for sure. So many lovely ones.

Mid-America is scheduled to open early this year, some time in January instead of in February.
