@utahxericman

Thanks!

There were a lot of salvia at FBTS that I wanted to get this time, but when I ordered last night and/or in late Feb., some weren't available til mid April and/or mid May. I didn't want to order the ones in mid April, just in case they wouldn't be ready for my April 23 shipping week and I thought mid May would be a little too late to ship. But, who knows, I may end up ordering again and ordering some that are available mid May. Hilarious!

I've grown Autumn Sage Elk Pomegranate for several years and I love the beautiful color of it. Another Autumn Sage that has a beautiful color is Tangerine Ballet, which I grew several years ago in a container.

I grew Orange Door years ago and liked the color so much that I had to get it again.

I love the ones your getting this year. Wanted to get Windwalker Royal Red, but didn't want to wait for it to become available. I should've ordered sooner than 2/21 probably.

I've grown Black Cherry before in the ground and it's always grown good for me. Love the color of it.

I always feel "like a kid in a candy store" when I'm on the FBTS website. So many delights, but not enough money. Hilarious!

New to me that have germinated so far include S.semiatatra, S.darcyi, S.viridis and the tall form of S.coccinea.

Nice list. There's something wonderfully addictive to me about the scent of S. darcyi. It hasn't been hardy here so far (though it's supposed to be), but I love the scent of the foliage so much I've been willing to start seedlings every year.

[quote="utahxericman"]My most disappointing Salvias last year as far as growth and bloom time goes were Elk Blue Moon II, Elk Plum Parfait, Lowrey's Peach, Shell Dancer, Black Cherry and Wild Watermelon. If they don't return I don't think I will be buying them again.

You might find this recent article of ours useful:

http://www.fbts.com/getting-st...

Salvia microphylla and most S. x jamensis are generally not the best choices for this climate, favoring a more humid environment. There are exceptions. But in this general type of Salvia, s. greggii is the best adapted.

Black Cherry has declined in vigor in the last few years. We have dropped it. Perhaps somewhere out there a vigorous one remains, but most in the trade now are not what they were a decade ago.

@ricelg

I haven't decided yet. I don't know if I'll plant them all in the ground or put them all in containers or some in the ground and some in containers. They're estimated to ship the week of September 18.

I was just on the HCG website and I noticed that all of them are still available and their 20% off advanced perennials is still on and ends July 31, if you're interested in these. I might take another looks at their plants before the sale ends.

Another site you may want to check out is Flowers by the Sea, they are having a 30% off sale at www.fbts.com

I picked up a few more Salvia's they are arriving today! Here is my latest order:

Salvia guaranitica 'Elk Argentina Skies' I picked up two more of these, I like the ones that I ordered earlier in the year they are starting to take off and do well know. I love the color of these.

Salvia greggii 'Dark Dancer' A new one for me, but I saw a plant at last years Salvia Summit and I knew I would eventually get some. They had big flowers for the greggii's and I loved the color as well.

Salvia microphylla 'Killer Cranberry' A first for me.

Salvia x 'Christine Yeo' A first for me.]

Salvia guaranitica 'Purple Haze' Excited for this one as well. I love the flower shape of the guaranitica's as a whole. Love when the hummers pollinate them, their whole head gets swallowed by the flower.

Salvia fulgens A first for me as well. Love the fuzzy intense red flowers (saw these at a botanical garden and had to get them.

I also picked up a few Burgundy Seduction from Annie's Annuals when they had a sale.

I have a garden hybrid (Lipstick and Marachino) I believe are the parents as it grew directly below Lipstick (where lipstick grew last year anyway it didn't survive the winter). This Salvia has amazing red/orange/pink color...don't really know what color it is. I'll have to post some pics of it. I hope it survives the winter...I may take cuttings of it just in case. Here is a pic of the Salvia.

Thanks for mentioning the http://www.fbts.com/ sale. I had gotten too busy and forgot to mention it.

Nice new collection.

Wonderful to hear about your salvia hybrid. Beautiful salvia in your pic. I hope it survives the winter.

You two are going to be bad for my budget! @Marilyn @utahxericman

This may be a dumb/newbie question but is there a way for me to know which ones produce viable/reproducable seed? Or any reason to think that I couldn't propagate through other methods (like cuttings, etc)? If I really liked them, I'd like the ability to add if possible.

Funny Hilarious!

Off the top of my head, Salvia coccinea varieties produce seeds. Below is the database list of the coccinea varieties:

https://garden.org/plants/sear...

I can't think of any other salvia (right now) that produces seeds.

I've never made cuttings, so I don't know anything regarding that.

Yes the coccinia's produce seed that usually is true to forum or the seeds will look like the parent (probably not all of them but the varieties that I have grown) If it says its an F1 hybrid it won't be true to the parent.

Many of the Salvia's are fairly east to root from cuttings, some are harder than others but I have rooted 12+ varieties some root in about 10 days others take MUCH longer.

Other Salvia's produce seed as well, just depends some are complex hybrids so their seed/offspring won't look exactly like the parent. Anyway as you really get into Salvia's you will find there is just about every flower color known to mankind available.

Yes I can be bad on one's budget including my own lol.

Thanks. I've gotten some seeds from my Coccinias, Greggii, and Roemeriana. I was wondering about the hybrids, thanks. Could I ask you to either post or PM me some of the varieties you've been successful with cuttings. I've had some success with cuttings here but have not (yet) tried any salvias. But I like the plants SO much, I really want to...

Sorry I missed your questions.
Some I have had success with cuttings are salvia Oxyphora, Red Mountain Sage, Vermillion Bluffs, Wendys's Wish, Embers Wish, Windwalker Royal Red, Maraschino, Heatwave Sparkle and a few others. I will try a few more varieties this year. I lost most of my cuttings due to a white fly infestation that I battled all winter I ended up burning most/all of my cuttings. I could not get rid of the whiteflies no matter what I tried Sighing! Grumbling Stupid Whiteflies!
