If I may, I would add a list. These are from 'Waterwise Plants for Sustainable Gardens / 200 Drought Tolerant Choices for All Climates' by Lauren and Scott Ogden. Mine is a library copy, so your local library may have it also. I'm a great admirer of their books and what I really like is that right away it says that all of the plants in the book will get by on one inch of water (rain or irrigation) every two weeks in the hottest part of the peak growing season... once established
I really appreciate that since the term drought tolerant can seem variable and we get no rain here in the summer. It's the first time I've come across a specific amount mentioned.
I would also add that I like the fact that High Country Gardens lists in their catalogues which plants are rabbit and deer resistant.

Achilliea 'Moonshine'
Alyssum montanum / 'Mountain Alysum'
Baptisia minor / 'Wild Indigo'
Calylophus hartwegii / 'Sundrops'
Centranthus / 'Jupiter's Beard'
Dalea purpurea / 'Purple Prairie Clover'
Eryngium planum/ 'Blue Sea Holly'
Linum lewisii / 'Western Blue Flax'
Nepetas / Various Catmints
Papaver orientale / 'Oreintal Poppy'
Ratibida / 'Prairie Coneflower'
Satureja / 'Purple Mountain Savory'
Ruella humilis / 'Wild Petunia'
Scutellaria resinosa / 'Prairie Skullcap'
Sidalcea / Checkerbloom'
Stachys coccinea / Texas Betony'

Thank you, Sherry. I can vouch for a lot of those here in my zone as well. Some new names there that I'm anxious to try...Dalea, Satureja and Scutellaria. I hope they are hardy here as well.

Thanks for the great list! Thumbs up

I've been wanting the Dalea since I saw it in High Country Gardens and I'm thinking I need the Scutellaria and Satureja as well, of course.

Some that I have not seen mentioned are Tiarella and Carex Ice Dance. I have them both under evergreen trees so they get limited rainfall and both do great. Both good choices for dry shade

Is Tiarella evergreen, Bob? I have a couple but I can't tell this year because our weather has been so warm. How are they in pots?

Tiarella are semi evergreen depending on how cold your winters get . By me boarder of zones 6a - 5b they turn color in late Oct. and keep leaves till March. By you I would think they would be evergreen. Carex Ice Dance is evergreen.

I have never tried them in pots. Do you know SPRINGCOLOR she grows a lot of plants in containers. I know she does Heuchera and Heucherella.

Daela here too and same reason Sherry. I have ordered quite a bit from H.C.G.'s, but most of the plants have died. I am just on their edge of Zone 5. I think I'm 5a and it's just enough colder. I did like the Chocolate flower. Berlandera, I think.

My substitute for skullcap is Germander. it just grew one year and the bees LOVE it! It's also over 2' tall so I can see the flowers.

I love nepeta! My neighbor just gave me starts and I forget I have it, LOL!

Bob,
Tiarella is another I've wanted to try.

Helianthus is another long blooming plant that's a nice yellow. My neighbor gave me three, double petal plants. Next year, it reseeded into singles.

May be a silly question, gonna ask anyway. Nepeta is supposed to be catnip, right? Does it attract cats to your beds? I have wanted to try it for awhile, but already have a problem with feral cats using my beds for litter boxes. Don't want to PAY them to do so. Hilarious!

There is catnip and catmint and yes, cats love them. Unfortunately, once they find it, they also roll all over it and make a mess of the plant...lol..

Yes, they most certainly do. Well, mine do anyway. I understand the effect on them wears off after awhile ... but not before some of the damage is done. Glare I love Nepeta though. Great plant!

Both os my cats will gnaw nepeta (cat mint) to the ground. That's ok by me because we have it growing wild all over the place and it can be quite invasive. When I pull it up, I toss it to the cat who will hold it to his face with both paws and just chomp.

Around here, the wild common type of nepeta is drought tolerant and winter hardy. I live in a semi arid plain that sometimes doesn't get rain for weeks or even months.

Ah, that confirms my idea that it would be a BAD idea to plant here. Hilarious!

Someone else in your area has it ... I wonder... oh, it's StephGTX. Actually, she might be a bit further south than you, but she likes it a lot.

I have Tiarella in with my ferns. It's a wonderfully low-care plant; in fact, I do nothing for it. It seems just fine left to its own devices. Smiling

Karen,

Germander is listed as being a nuisance plant in some cases. It does have a long bloom time however, and the bees love it!

This is Black snowflake. This is the best one, love it. The next picture is a trailing type. There are 2 kinds of Tiarell: More ground cover trailing and then the bush type that tend to grow more like heuchera.

This is 'Running Tapestry' In the summer the whole pot was covered in this tiarella. This one seems to die back some in winter. Not evergreen like the others.

This is Heucherella 'Dayglow Pink' I really like many of the new heucherella. Nice winter color.

I have two books on heuchera, heucherella and tiarella
1) Heuchera, Tiarella and Heucherell a Gardener's Guide by Charles and Martha Oliver. If my memory is right they are the folks from Primerose Path. In this book they talk about breeding from them and Terra Nova. A bit old as they do not talk about some of the newer hybrids but gives a good history.
2) Heucheras and Heucherellas Coral Bells and Foamy Bells, by Dan Heims and Grahame Ware. Easy to read and lots of nice pictures. Good book for ID. Not much on Tiarella.
