Is that the one on your "vegetable" arbor? What a shame! Such a big, beautiful rose.

Yeah, trying to decide what I want on that trellis now. May just plant a second clematis but I really would like something evergreen so will have to do some thinking on it.

Sue, that is really heart-breaking! Such a beautiful specimen and it is still looking so spectacular! I had the same experience with my Westerland last year. I also did a lot of reading on the subject. I found a couple of articles stating that the roses grew just fine even with the gall but most advised removal, with the surrounding soil.
One explanation was that gall is like cancer - if it effects a single branch you can try removing it but with crown gall around the base or graft, the whole plant should be removed and one shouldn't replant a rose in the same spot for at least five years. I opted for removal - better safe than sorry.

Sad It is so sad, it's the rose we see sitting in our family room looking out the sliding glass doors so it is a beautiful focal point. It will be odd not having that huge rose in that spot. Not risking another rose there so that's why I have to really think about what I want to grow there.
Ah well, the gardens are ever evolving and changing, just considering this as new opportunities. Thumbs up

Sue ... don't consider your rose lost, yet ...

I remember Kim mentioning a product called Galltrol for crown gall. It is also referenced on the UC IPM website.

I don't know enough about it to give you information, so you would have to do your own research.

Here's a link to the UC IPM site:

Good luck and let us know what you find out.

Thanks Lyn but this is gall is huge and in a vegetable bed, I read a bit about the Gallex product and it sounds more feasible for smaller galls. I wish I had seen it earlier.
Thanks for that Colleen.

Such a shame that a great rose like that will have to go! Crying

Maybe a wisteria could go there.

Oh Suzanne that is so sad Sad True that this is simply an opportunity to experience something new- the garden is ever changing and nothing in it is truly permanent. It makes today's gifts from the garden such a blessing knowing they're to be enjoyed in the moment, never to be exactly duplicated again.

So true Neal! The cliché 'Stop and smell the roses' is very appropriate here. One should remember to take the time to enjoy the garden more - I know I should!

Amanda, 'Wisteria' was also the first to come to mind but when considering Sue mentioned evergreen I thought of a 'Star Jasmine'??? My mom grows it in her garden and the scent is absolutely gorgeous and is makes a wonderful show. I would love to have one here but there is so much I would love to have .....

Sorry about your loss, Sue.

I am a great fan of Confederate Jasmine, Trachelospermum jasminoides. I love the dark green foliage and the wonderful fragrance. Not sure if it would be quite so photogenic, though. I like Amanda's suggestion of a wisteria, although they can overwhelm if not kept under strict control.

I'd be interested to know why it will not be a rose you plant here the next time.

No to wisteria, it may be beautiful when in bloom but that's short lived plus I want evergreen.

I am considering this, if I can get cuttings to take. It's so striking paired with a purple clematis although this one overpowers that poor vine!

Star Jasmine (Trachelospermum jasminoides) is a good suggestion but too large and fast growing here. When I lived in the Bay Area (San Jose) they were everywhere, in commercial landscaping and private gardens, so to me, over done & no longer interesting. Hilarious! I feel the same way about oleanders.

Other possibilities, because I already have them:

I was going to suggest the Lavender Trumpet Vine because it grows so quickly. It might be too rambunctious, however. I recently cut mine back to the root because it had swallowed a gazebo and several lilacs.

It is fantastic looking though, it would just have to get regular haircuts. I planted one at the front base of my satellite pergola and I already know it's not in the right place, don't know what I was thinking. Maybe I'll dig that one up and use it in the veggie planter.
