What's Blooming in December

By LarryR
December 17, 2011

Readers responded with an avalanche of photos to our call for blossoms from their gardens to publish in our December issue of What's Blooming. Thank you one and all! Before we take a look, though, let's hear from our Mystery Blossom Contest winner, Robin (Robynznest).

That's one of my favorite houseplants, tarev! I've never seen mine bloom, but then I may just not have been paying attention.

Nice photo of Saphira there beside you, Larry.

Beautiful plants, I love the crinkled foliage, too.

Here are a few recent shots of color.

This is Vesper, planted next to a coprosma shrub that I thought would compliment this rose which usually is more apricot in the warmer months.

This is a new bidens for me called 'Goldilocks Rocks', they are such wonderful long time bloomers here for bed edges and as spillers in pots. Nice delicate looking lacy foliage too.
Thumb of 2011-12-20/Calif_Sue/b694c8

My favorite bacopa, don't know the cultivar name though, larger blooms that the usual ones. I have it planted in a salvaged clay pipe (as shown in my blog) and it's been blooming non-stop for months now. I plan to get a lot more of these to scatter throughout the garden.
Thumb of 2011-12-20/Calif_Sue/63db2a

This is Cafe, an unusual colored tannish rose that changes it's shade with the weather, sometimes it's shows a lot more apricot as seen in some of my other database images.
Thumb of 2011-12-20/Calif_Sue/7ff6c0

This is Helichrysum 'Monster Fireball', a straw flower than has been blooming non-stop since I planted it in early summer.

and of course, pansies are hitting the nurseries, just picked up a flat of these "Frizzle Sizzle Mix'.

Oh, I love that Helichrysum 'Monster Fireball'! So that's what it is called! In the northern mountain region in the Philippines, it is locally called Everlasting, simply because it does not seem to die off, even after plucking them and stringing them into a lei, lasts almost forever as a dried flower with very rich colors. Usually, the lei adorns the statues or images of saints inside the church or in one's altar at home.

Thanks for all your comments and gorgeous photos! Thumbs up

Y'all should know that Sue has uploaded thousands of photos--as in 7,000--to our ATP database!

Thanks also for the kind comments about Saphira. She's a rescued Afghan Hound who's registered with the AKC but can't be shown because she's too tall. Sharon has met her in person (or should I say "in dog" Big Grin ). I named her after a famous belly dancer in Washington, D.C. Here's a better photo of Saphira and one of her namesake. (I hope you won't think that the latter is too risqué!)

I agree, the four legged Saphira is indeed much more beautiful ... and too tall or not, she can be "shown" here any time! I don't think I've ever seen a more beautiful Afghan Hound!
