Well, I do have some rose blooms on this first day of 2012. Not that we are supposed to have blooms now but the weather has been mild this year. Might turn cold for a day or two but then warms up.

I haven't even made any new years resolutions. That way I don't have to break any. Hilarious!

It is cold and it is going to get colder. Temps really started falling overnight and supposed to be much colder even tomorrow. Wind is blowing and wind chills tonight supposed to be below zero. We really have been very warm most of the time. But not to worry too much, by the end of the week it is going to be up to the mid forties again which is what I want. Can't stand the cold. Thumbs down

Rita sounds like Michigan where I live I think if its going to be this cold we might as well have snow so the roses would be all nice and snug Confused

I wrote a long post for this thread yesterday and now it isn't here, so I guess I had too many windows open as usual and deleted some without ever hitting the "finished" button.

Anyway, I resolve to deadhead as soon as it's needed this year, and maybe to even fertilize the roses. I'll have a lot more time for gardening because my job has been cut by three-fourths and will take virtually no time at all to do.

Roses love their fertilizer, you will not be dissapointed.

As for snow, I hate it. Hate the snow, hate the cold. Hate Winter. Grumbling

Rita - the earth needs time to rest, to gather itself, and to die off. If there was no winter, the earth would deplete itself of nutrients within a few years. Winter balances the heat & the franticness of the youth of the planet in both flora & fauna so that only the strong survive. I may not care too much for winter, but I'm glad that I have it. The promise of spring and the glory of the rebirth of the planet's life, to me, outweighs the cold & bleakness of the most miserable winters. And, with living truly upstate on the mouth of the St. Lawrence river where it starts on Lake Ontario, where winter lasts & lasts, where it snows for a month solid everyday 8-24", where the sun doesn't rise until after 9am and is under the horizon by 4:10pm.. The knowledge that, in a few months time the air will be perfumed with wild lilacs 10-15' tall, that meadows everywhere are covered from tip to tip with a veritable blanket of flowers so chaotic in color you'd go crazy trying to find a pattern, watching wild tiger lilies nodding in slow tributaries on the waters way to the Black River. And, of course, not to mention the tear-inducing specticle of that most glorious time of year: autumn: where a drive to the grocery store can pass for a Hallmark calendar.

None of this would be possible without winter & cold. The wonders that Mother Nature have bestowed upon us should not be taken for granted, no matter how much it conveniences us. We mere humans just have to find the good in it all, whether we like it or not.

Oh, and Zuzu - I think your comment is in the December post.. I do remember reading that your hours got cut.

Thanks, Toni. Actually, I talked about my hours being cut in the Happy New Year thread. The post I lost, which was supposed to be on this thread, mentioned more of my resolutions for the year. For one thing, I'm going to break the potato chip habit. I never ate them all my life and then my doctor told me about a year ago that I should gain 10 pounds to have a cushion to fall back on in case I get sick. Potato chips were the easiest way to gain weight, but I've gained the 10 and I don't want to gain more than 10, so I have to give them up.

Not everywhere has winter. At least not a real one with lots of cold and snow. And there may be many people who enjoy it (I am sure there are) but I hate it and will never change my mind about that. I really should live where there is much less winter than we have here but I am not about to move now, too old and settled were I am. I guess if I lived elsewhere I would find something else to compain about.

I used to live in New England where there are real winters. I am very glad to have less winter here and can do without the distinct seasonal contrast. However, I admire your great attitude, Toni!

Gee Zuzu, and here I just picked up my bag of chips on New Year's Day and made some clam dip -- and away I went on my chip frenzy! I get one more shot at it this week and then I too must give it up. I'm only bad around the holidays -- but then I'm very very very bad!!! And, of course, I already have such a lovely cushion to fall back on without the chips and dip so there's no excuse for me there!
