How Exciting and Scary! I am so glad she was okay!

Apparently she was just fine. She flew fine. I came so close to crying after that was over. Just one of those experiences that words don't do justice. I am humbled.

It surely was! And my poor hubs; he was down putting the trash out for collection & missed it. He was sad.

I think so Linda. If I thought it would show the spot the way it looks in real life, I would take a photo but I know it would not show it well. It was a small open area in the grass but surrounded by tall grass & the blades going every which way. I think the hummie just got stuck in that "void" & it was just one of those 1 in a million kind of things. Her wings were beating against the surrounding grass & she just couldn't get the lift needed to take off.

They have such small weak little feet too. I cannot imagine them being able to climb their way out.

I shared these in the September backyard birds thread. For those of you who visit both threads sorry for the duplication. Female Ruby throat perched in a Viburnum bush guarding her feeder. Hummers are all over the place here right now. I think most are young birds of the year. Enjoying them now as they will be leaving soon. Please click on the photo for a little better view.

I actually saw 2 Hummers today while taking the pup out for a walk, but was w/out camera. With the severely below temperature avg. lately I'm surprised they're still evident.

That had to be an amazing experience Ann, near epiphany status!
My closest experience of contact w/ a flying garden denizen was when a Hummingbird Moth flew so close to my face I could like feel the flutter of his wings on my cheek.

when I was a teenager, before I left for college, I had a cat who was an indoor/outdoor cat, Bummer. He was a goofy kitty, but a mostly good kitty. Loved stalking the deer. And, somehow, he'd always bring me presents. Usually gophers or moles or mice, but twice he brought me live hummingbirds. He never hurt them, just pluck their belly feathers out. Left the wings/tails alone, just plucked the belly feathers out. So I was trying to nurse hummies w/o belly feathers!! They're sooooooooo fragile, so incredibly fragile... but feisty, too. If I didn't hang the feeders up fast enough, they'd be buzzing my head and twittering like mad.. and then they'd perch on my fingers while I was in the process of hanging up the feeders! But much rather have hummies doing that than getting divebombed by rancorous bluejays...
