Opinion: A Few Good Trees

By Sharon
January 10, 2012

It's a good time to take a look at the bare bones of trees now that winter is upon most of us. That's about all we can see anyway since they aren't dressed in their leafy finery at the moment. Look out your window. How many trees can you see?

We went hiking in Jan 2007 at Muir Woods National Park and in the park they have this huge cross section of a tree, showing significant events that happened during the life of the tree as shown on its rings. Such a very big cross section indeed, makes me just imagine how big and tall this tree was before:

Oh Dick! That is so beautiful.

I've been amongst the Redwoods only once in my life and I'll never forget them. They absolutely humbled me with their majesty.

But what grabs me in the first photo, is that a stump to the right of your steps? That's so beautiful. Look at the colors in it. Wow. And your steps are another thing of beauty.

I could just sit on those steps and be happy for years. Rain or shine, it wouldn't matter because I'd be surrounded by those wonderful trees.
Thank you.

Tarev, that photo is just stunning! You must frame that and put it somewhere in a place of honor!

Dick, your yard is too beautiful for words. That driveway is amazing. It must be awesome to come home! And, I love the moss between the stones...

Good gracious..."Beautiful photo of your trees Dick"... as Lyn said.

You must greet each day with the power of nature at your doorstep. And you're pretty good with that camera, too! I'm impressed.

tarev, is the cross section of a sequoia? Amazing.

it is VERY humbling when you see a 2000 year old tree's age via its rings

this one is our favorite old growth stump of the half doz on our property
tho not even close to being one the largest
it is actually 2 stumps side by side

Shoe someone has to live here & it might as well be me Big Grin

If I knew how to do cuttings, I'd send you one. I have both red and yellow in one corner of my yard - found them at Home Depot in spring 2009, right after falling in love with them from the Bluestone Perennials catalog that year.

Now, I'm in love with that coral-barked Japanese Maple...

The cross section image is that of a coastal redwood, said to be about 800 years old.

This is so sad and it happened today; in Longwood Florida where it has been very dry and where fires seem to be a bit rampant right now, an old bald cypress that was called 'The Senator' burned totally. It was estimated to be around 3500 years old. Reminded me of the photo that Tarev shared.

They don't seem to be sure how or where the fire started but they don't think it was arson. It was named for a US senator who had donated the land it grew on some years ago for a park.

What's amazing is that it lived this long.

That is very sad Sharon. I had heard of that tree some years ago.

Wiki calls it a pond cypress and the Post says it is a bald cypress. I'm not sure of the difference or if there is one.

Did you mean to leave us a list, Lynn?

And thanks for the links. The Post is the one I'd read.
