Opinion: A Few Good Trees

By Sharon
January 10, 2012

It's a good time to take a look at the bare bones of trees now that winter is upon most of us. That's about all we can see anyway since they aren't dressed in their leafy finery at the moment. Look out your window. How many trees can you see?

There used to be small stands of aspens in my mountains. I'm not sure how or when they got there, because they are not really all that common in KY and I'm also not sure they are still there. There are lovely legends about them, though, the sounds they make, whispering when the wind is not even blowing. Because of their whispering sounds they were often considered sacred by Native Americans.

That is a beautiful photograph, Brenda.
Lucky you to have them all around you.

Well, it's snowing sideways now. This morning when I got up my back deck looked just like some little old lady had dropped her powder puff on it. Then the wind blew that away and it was gone till now. Now it's snowing sideways. Until last night it had been about 60* since Christmas. The lakes that surround us are about 50 degrees even now. I doubt there'll be any ice skating even with this little snowflake-y cold spell.

Great Article Sharon, it should be published worldwide I tip my hat to you. . And I love all the pictures and words from the tree lovers here. It is snowing out there in the dark so nothing much to see at the moment, but in front of my house is a birch tree (betula pubecens). In my back yard is a Mountain ash, a Swedish Whitebeam, a couple of poplars, a lilac and a number of seedlings I am growing that I will plant on my patch of land in the country. Across our parking lot is a row of poplars and across the street is a border of various trees and shrubs.

I love growing trees. I have been planting seedlings every year since 2000. Up here trees grow slowly, and I have suffered losses due to weather and ignorance, but I have learned from my mistakes and I plan to keep planting and taking care of my woodland to be. Hugs from almost a treeless Iceland.

Magga, your world is so beautiful no matter the time of year. The pictures are breathtaking.

If you and your friends and family continue to plant and care for all those trees, Iceland won't be treeless much longer.
Thank you for your comment and also for those wonderful pictures. I'm glad you joined us here. It's good to know those who care so much for our trees and our environment have no geographical boundaries. The oxygen those trees produce has no boundaries either. Thumbs up

Magga, I agree, your photos are gorgeous! It doesn't look treeless to me! And as gardeners, we all make mistakes, and we all learn from them, and we are always looking forward to doing it better next time. Usually, we do!

Mary, that picture is stunning also. He is an amazing photographer. We have one more, this one, which hangs above my desk where my computer is so I can just look up and see it. The light he captured in it is brilliant. Patience got that picture, that and an amazing eye. http://www.tonynewlin.com/Wint... I'm pretty sure he loves trees, too.

Sharon, I can't believe it is snowing sideways in Kentucky!!! We have gotten far less snow than normal so far this year, but I didn't think it snowed ever in your part of the world, much less 'sideways' (which I am quite familiar with!). Stay warm, my friend! And p.s., you are welcome to come and live here in beautiful SW Colorado... but it's darn cold this time of year!

It doesn't snow often, Brenda, and it didn't linger long, but it was fun to watch as it tried to land somewhere. It is cold tonight, about 28, but honestly that probably won't last long either. It never does.

Thanks for the invitation, I just might someday show up on your doorstep just to look at your beautiful trees. Green Grin!

In the spirit of loving trees...whether with their full foliage or as they go deciduous during winter..here is a photo we took yesterday at the UC Davis Arboretum, showing a nice contrast of the leafless and the evergreens..as its reflection shows on the creek. Sunshiny and all in California, really dry this year, still chilly at nights and early mornings but the view is as awesome and serene as it can get Big Grin Just click on the photo to expand the panoramic shot:

Beautiful photo Tarev. I agree that winter time is a great time to get out and take photos of the trees. The water is mesmerizing.

Here is a photo I took at Home Depot this last Thurs.
Japanese Maple 'Sango Kaku'. Now to find a nice mature speciment somewhere. I love the coral barked maple.
