Has anyone here tried growing the painted fern inside the house, as a houseplant? I am afraid it may get to hot here to grow it outdoors.

My painted fern will arrive Friday! Yeah! I may just try putting it out by my fountain/waterfall in the back yard, and see how it does there.

Alan,
It should be ok. They love shade and that's what houseplants love. I can't believe it no different than any other houseplant fern. Go for it. If you plant it outside, put it in a pot so you could move it around until you find the right spot for it.
BTW I like you new photo, almost didn't recognize you in it. Looks good.

This photo is taken in Tombstone, Arizona. I am sitting in front of the largest Rose Tree in the world. It is the Tombstone, Lady Banks Rose. Incredible to see, when it is in bloom in March and April. Great place to take your family to see the demonstrated gunfights that happened, entertainment, etc....

I do not recommend Home Repo for getting this plant. Mine arrived yesterday. I'm guessing the fern is dormant. Basically I got a box of soil and roots. There is no live plant that I can see. Going to pot it up, and put it in a sunny window and hope for the best. If it doesn't come back from the runners, I can always get my money back with the Home Depot warranty.

Yeah, this is a tough time of the year for the warmer states - the rest of the garden world is basically asleep, when you are in your (or reaching) prime.

Please, don't expect *too* much sympathy... Rolling on the floor laughing

No, wasn't wanting sympathy, just warning everyone. I potted it up and put it in a bright sunny window...hopefully we will see something soon Smiling

Alan, how disappointing! Thumbs down

I LOVE getting plants in the mail! I can't imagine opening the box to find nothing but dirt. Let's hope it recovers!

Charter ATP Member I was one of the first 300 contributors to the plant database!
I did a bit of a google search on them and found some links that could be helpful. It appears with a bit of care they can be grown outdoors in Texas. They say they're deciduous, so probably arriving leafless is natural for your time of year.

No honey, I meant sympathy for your weather being so warm right now.

As long as they're not getting any direct sun or drying out.... should be good. I bet you could ask Barb on S'west, I bet she's tried 'em. If she tried Hosta and Clematis, lol....

Hey good news! See shoots starting to show above the soil on my painted fern. It's coming back from that blob of soil and roots...lol! Seems to love the sunny window.

Here is a picture of the fern coming up. I think there are two different kinds of ferns in here. The brown colored ones are the painted fern. Not sure what the green plants coming up are??

May I suggest misting it when you think about it? You probably already are, but just in case....

Yep, have been misting it daily, and also now misting a unrooted (so far) white day blooming Epiphyllum right next to it Smiling This came free in my order of a rooted Disocactus ackermannii. It's really starting to take off in that window with our sunny and warm days we have been having. I've ordered some macrame hangers, so I can hang it right in front of that window. Macrame hangers are getting so hard to find anymore. No one carries them. Sad And they are so perfect for pots.
