How delicately composed, sadly so short lived. Is that par for most cacti blooms? You've captured its beauty in the banner.

Baja will give you the scientific answer, Fleur, but in my experience I have maybe 50% of my cacti blooms which last for only a day, and then I have a lot of others that will open and close for up to 3 or 4 days. We have to really appreciate the single day blooms, and be fast to get photos!

Yes, it's basically serendipity, and celebrating the thing in the moment. I stumbled across this plant in the park and fortunately I had my camera close at hand.

Flowers are tremendously expensive from the standpoint of water, which is often the limiting factor in hot, dry places. So a lot of cacti have short-lived and/or nocturnal blooms to compensate. Curiously though, they still flower in abundance, often synchrony, when they are doing well.

Thank You! for the kind words and the acorns, people.

I'm glad you got to see the blooms that day, and get a nice pic of them to remember them and to share with us.
Amazing how plants manage in such harsh conditions, and yet put out such pretty flowers.
I'll look for them in the desert here in San Diego County. Thumbs up
