Hi everyone! Hope you all had a great, safe, & warm Thanksgiving. Smiling

I'm behind again on updates, but wanted to share this video from Thanksgiving day
here....it all happened while we were still asleep.
(Note the timeline on YouTube. I added the text, and YouTube added links without me asking...pretty amazing AI Blinking )

I'm adding the timeline here so you get an idea of what happens & when.
To see the links, you would need to click on YouTube in the bottom of the video.
Anyway, hope you will enjoy the play. Thumbs up

Elapsed time:
0:16 Flock of finches eating duck food (scratch)
0:48 1st duck splashes down
1:39 Flock arrives
1:48 George the Great Blue Heron lands
2:10 More ducks
2:30 Let the Fights Begin!
(mayhem...non-stop jostling, jockying, pushing, shoving, chasing, posturing, flapping virtually the whole time)
7:35 flock of crows lands & ignores the ducks & George as they clean up
the leftover coyote food
8:30 more fighting
8:40 ducks start to eat....Bonnie & Clyde, and another girl
10:30 more ducks start to eat, but still lots of JJPSCPF in the pond
12:15 Big Fight
12:30 George dives in after a fish & misses, crows split,
and all the ducks jump in the pond....George shakes it off.
13:40 fight
17:20 Big Fight
19:35 2 sides......Us & Them
20:11 More fIghting......heads up
20:20 Ducks freak out, but don't take off.
20:35 Ducks take off in 2 waves
20:53 "You Know Who" saunters in & George takes off.
"Just another day on the farm" 🤣

Lots more to come. Smiling

Another enjoyable pond video, Cal! Hurray! I tip my hat to you.

I like those ducks playing and splashing around while George seems to stand there calmly overlooking everything. I didn't realize how large herons are until I looked out the window one afternoon about a month ago and one was standing next to our new pond.

What was George after when he flopped into the pond?
Do you think the cat would attack George? George is awfully big?

Thanks, Jim! Smiling

I like those ducks playing and splashing around while George seems to stand there calmly overlooking everything. I didn't realize how large herons are until I looked out the window one afternoon about a month ago and one was standing next to our new pond.

Good thing the pond is iced over now....they're persistant, & patient, and
have taken some of my 8" goldfish, down the hatch! Crying

What was George after when he flopped into the pond?
Do you think the cat would attack George? George is awfully big?

He was after fish....he'll take whatever he can get, even the little mosquito fish.

"Big Bird" George is probably 5'6" heads up. Blinking
He could easily take out the cat with that sharp beak, but glad he didn't.

"Miss Kitty" is a neighbor cat that comes around regularly hunting for mice,
and to mooch....she knows I will give her treats. She holds her fluffy tail high,
and swishes it back & forth. I'm a "dog" person, and like cats, but never had one
warm up to me like she has.

I'll be working in the garden, totally oblivious, and next thing I know she's
running between my legs with her fluffy tail! Kind of startling to say the least. Sticking tongue out

The ducks came back 2 weeks ago....just a couple, Bonnie & Clyde that ruled the pond last season, too. The next day, they had one boy in tow, then another,
showing them the ropes, but also letting them know who's boss.....Bonnie! Hilarious!
Usually the males are the mates that go after other ducks, with the females backing them up with beak pointing to the side, "Back off! Back off!".

More ducks came, and B&C can't keep all of them in line, but at least one other
female fought back against Bonnie (just guessing as there were so many)
but it was quite a girl-on-girl-free-for-all with both claiming victory, i.e. by dunking
forcefully several times, then rising up & flapping at the same time.

Males & females both do that after a fight, when something spooks them, or even when they're embarrassed because they can't make it onto the coving from the water, like "I'm good! I wasn't scared! I'm tough! I showed them!" Hilarious!
Just like humans. Rolling my eyes.

Before the ducks came back the hyacinths covered ~80% of the pond
so I pulled out a bunch of large ones from the back of the pond to make
some safe little "bays" so the underdogs can go there to stay out of trouble.
Bonnie & Clyde actually drive the younger ducks there like they're being made
to stand in the corner like a child.

Next I had to take out almost all the hycinths in front to give the ducks more room
when they try to come up to eat....they were kind of being funneled before between the lotus & the water lilies. But I also had to leave some hycinths over a lotus tub a few feet from the front to protect some fish would sleep there, and would be basically like shooting fish in a barrel for George.

We still have lots of hyacinths, and more will have to come out....the tall ones will die back....I'll keep the small ones for next year. They grow so fast, especially in Autumn.

Note the aqua oval floating tub on the right...

"After' (taken just 15 min ago)...the oval lotus tub is missing!
I thought it was safe floating a few feet from the edge, but
one of our little raccoon friends, Rita, was playing with it, and managed
to sink it in 5ft of cold water! D'Oh! D'Oh! D'Oh!
So yesterday late afternoon, when the water was 59F, I had to get in (with a life vest on), cut the small island loose, and drag the large lotus tub over to the left side in shallower water. Normally I would be able to lift it enough to tip out enough water to float it again, but it somehow weighs a lot more, or I'm getting even weaker.
Anyhow, I decided to just leave it in ~3ft for now. I'll probably just prop it up on a
couple of cinder blocks....they can live in 3ft, but like it shallower, even 6" of water.

and is finally starting to grow.

Taken from back through cattails & iris semi-submerged....too heavy for
the original floatation, and too heavy to pull out. Had to get in and hack it out
earlier this year. But it's still growing fine.

Stay tuned.....lots more! Smiling

Woops!
Sorry, I accidently inserted the wrong link
for the slideshow of Bonnie & Clyde. D'Oh!

Here it is. Smiling

BTW, woke up to see our raccoon family tussling on the big rock
in back of the pond. It's safe there, and has some warmth.

There are 2 kids that are as big as Mom now. I don't know how much longer
they'll stay together, but it's very heartwarming to see them loving each other.

Oy!! I didn't realize my last post was Nov 27 last year! Sticking tongue out
We must be having fun. Smiling

Almost everyday, especially lately with rain, wind, big clouds, lots of ducks, light & shadows, I'm taking pics & video throughout the day, using 2 hi-res security cams, and two 35mm digital cameras. Wish I could get it all, but I feel like the guy spinning plates on Ed Sullivan. Sticking tongue out

I had good intentions of updating this page at least once a week, but
you know what they say about good intentions. Rolling my eyes.

Here's a slideshow to start with....2 boys who staid all day today, just hanging out, napping.
They didn't eat much. I think it's an older more mature duck taking a younger
one under his wing so to speak, as he pokes him around, and shows him all
the cool moves to impress the girls.
The alpha male settles in on the larger raft of cannas, and the younger one
does the same on the smaller raft of iris.

Video coming!, sooner than later. Crossing Fingers! Crossing Fingers!

Hope you're having as much or more fun than I am. Smiling
Also hope you're warm & safe. Lots of wild weather here in California.

Just wanted to share this before we go camping later today....
he (she?) cruised by the pond early Monday before dawn. =P
https://www.youtube.com/watch?...

Be back Thurs, and will try to post several slideshows & videos of
the pond & the ducks.

The hyacinths are dying back, so need to haul out a lot, but will save
a 1/3 to re-grow. Also need to try cut up & haul out at least 1/2 of the
iris & cattails....will try using a motorized winch attached to a tree in the
back of the pond.

Also need to repot the lilies, and vacume the bottom, and do a water change.
Fun, fun, fun. Thumbs up

That's pretty cool seeing a bobcat at the pond.

You mention vacuuming...what make/model do you have? I was looking at vacuums again yesterday, but just don't seem to be able to make up my mind.

Hey Jim! Thinking about you as I watched the Nor'Easter coming your way on ABC news last night. If anyone is prepared, it's you. Thumbs up

BTW, we decided to stay home instead of camping...."Home Sweet Home"...
start a fire in the fireplace, have some cocoa, read a book. ;)

re: vacuuming the pond.....I just attach a sump pump to the end of a long pole
(usually has a net or brush on the end), and keep it off the bottom ~ 2ft so it doesn't suck up rocks into the impellar, or clog it with debris.

It does a great job removing the fine muck.

Sometimes I just suspend it in a fixed spot, stir up the muck around it with another pole & with a sturdy net on it....I drag the net & haul it up , then dump the muck
on the dirt. A netfull of muck is very heavy...at least 20lb. Sticking tongue out
All the while the pump is sucking out suspended muck.
Then I move the pump to another area in the deep end (9ft deep), and repeat.

I've also just pumped out 80% of the water, but not necessary, and water's expensive now. Probably not good for the fish either.

But do take out ~2ft of water to make it easier to take care of the lilies & lotus.
They should be waking up in a few weeks, so lots to do ahead of time.

Today need to feed the roses so the rain can water it in later. Thumbs up
I use Bayer All-In-One granules. It's also great for Hollyhocks....they get so buff! Blinking
Keeps the rust & mildew off, too. Thumbs up
