I pulled about 15 lbs. of tomatoes yesterday--mostly Belmonte, Peppermint and Gary Ibsen's Gold. I made 4 pints of tomato jam, and 3 1/2 pints of tomato sauce with our fresh herbs. And I used a couple of our jalepanos in the tomato jam.

Ohhh boy! Tomato jam! I haven't eaten any since childhood and I agree, the Jalapenos sound enticing. Thumbs up

I combined a couple of tomato jam recipes to come up with my favorite. I could have used less sugar this year because the tomatoes were so sweet, but I also didn't want to change the amount since it was a canning recipe (and I'm a really novice canner). But I love all of the spices in it--it has cinnamon sticks, allspice berries, cardamom pods, coriander, cumin, juniper berries and peppercorns. Also has caramelized onions and jalepanos. You simmer everything for about 4 hours till it gets nice and thick then bottle/can it.

My first cabbage this year. We made a sweet and sour cabbage (cabbage, red wine vinegar, maple syrup and apples from our orchard). Yum!

It was hot yesterday so I simply had tomato sandwiches for dinner. I just cut up my fresh from the garden home grown tomatoes. I use a heavy dark bread that I slater with butter and pile on the slices of tomato. End with some fresh onion on top.

I have been eating those same sandwiches since childhood as far back as I can remember and I am 71 right now. Will continue to eat them in the future as I do really like them.

Of course another favorite is the BLT on toast but it was too hot to even fry up the bacon!!

I just had a tomato sandwhich made with a huge yellow tomato only labled, potato leaf I got from a health food co-op in St. Cloud , Mn.
Now I have a lot of tomatoes this year and so far am very disappointed in that probably due to my eczema, I am very sensitive to their sweetness.
I.e. they nearly all taste sweet to me and I loath sweet tomatoes, while at the same time, I am to lazy to go outside right now and check varieties, at least half, including volunteers seem to be all the same to extremely similar heirloom type that has a green top over darker red PLUS they have, too many, including the yellow one get a hard green flesh circle inside near the top that is a pain to cut out.
At that the yellow one despite showing signs of curled leaf, at times, is producing huge tomatoes.
I also learned that leaving a Datura grow alongside/ between the tomatoes, a tomatillo and corn was not a good idea as it is huge and makes working in that area a pain in the buttocks.
I ripped out all but that one because I like them but learned a lesson.

That's why they invented Microwave bacon. That's the only kind I use these days...no dishes, no heat, no grease.

I only have the plain old fashioned kind that needs to be done in the frying pan.

When I cook bacon, I cook all of it, freeze it and make my own microwave bacon. Whistling Far easier to cook and clean up one mess.

Dinner last nite was stewed tomatoes, okra and onions (all from the garden) with sausage. Makes me hungry all over again!

Best way to eat a tomato is on a sandwich--I made my mom a BLT this week and she loved it (and she's really picky).

Rita--I can't believe you are 71. You have the energy and enthusiasm of someone much, much younger. You rock!!

It is so hot and humid both yesterday and today that my energy just fried up! Hilarious!

I like to take my dog on long walks but yesterday and today we barely made it to the grass strip at the end of the block everyone around here that has a dog calls the potty area. Shrug!

It's been so humid here it's not even comfortable to do anything outdoors. Our grass continues to stay wet after the 5" of rain we had on Sunday. My dog refuses to set a paw on wet grass. He's been leaping from rock to mulch to go potty.. Weird dog.........
