I am moving my Euphorbia to a shady area now..I saw some grown near a mall area here and it was profuse with blooms and had a good upright growth..comparing it to how I grow mine, I realized the difference was the position under the sun. The ones I saw at the mall area were fully shaded by a tree canopy. No wonder my plant seems to be splitting its growth in the middle Hilarious! half hiding under the schefflera shade and the others trying to hide behind the little shade coming from my succulent stand..poor thing..so let's see if it will improve after this. Smiling I hope my plant is not temperamental. Rolling my eyes.

These aren't really hardy. They never come back here. We don't even have really bad winters either. I planted one for my mom that came back once, but only once.

She is in zone 9. I thought it would be worth a second try for her. The problem with scales is the hard waxy coating they have. I heard insecticide soap would melt the wax coating and then the bug dies. Hummmm. Confused

I was just referring to the thread title. LOL. We have tried several varietites of "Hardy" Euphorbia. I don't believe there is such a plant. The tags said they were hardy in Zone 7, but they weren't in reality.

I never see any around here, nor had I ever heard of them till I came here. I think most growers exaggerate the zones to get more people to buy them. Our zone is just the average of temperatures but every once in a while it dips down and I loose my zone 8 plants, so I mostly buy for zone 7. If you are in zone 7 you might get zone 6 temps once in a while and at other times you will get zone 8 temps.
Have you checked out Digging Dog, they have some hardy to zone 5.

Euphorbia (Euphorbia epithymoides 'Bonfire') has come back here for 4 or 5 years now. Jo Ann seems to have better luck than I do getting it to prosper and look good though. Euphorbia (Euphorbia x martini 'Ascot Rainbow') came through the first winter with flying colors and was phenomenal. Lovey dubby Last winter about 2/3rds of it died. We have very inconsistent snow cover with relatively frequent winter thaws and z5b temps. Either of these might be worthwhile for someone to test in z7.

I think those are the two I tried. 'Bonfire' lasted two years and the other variety lasted a few months. I think they would rather be in San Diego. I think I would too. Rolling on the floor laughing

Well, now that you know about scales, maybe you could get another one and discourage new attacks with a simple insecticidal soap spray. Anything with tassels is worth a second try. Green Grin!

Oh I tried the insecticidal soap spray..it did not work..I just let it go after that..let them have it...those buggers engrossed with that plant, luckily ignoring any other plant around it. Good thing I guess, it spared my calamondin tree and lavender anouk growing beside it.
