It really is early here but I see that my row of RED ALERT lilies back by the fence are already up thru the winter mulch. Hurray! That means more lilies will show up soon. These always seem to start up the earliest.

I worry about lilies coming up right now. We have record high temps. From past experience, this is too early. I have lilies up and wish it were safe to push them back into the ground. Temps below 20, if happens from here on out, will make it so my lilies do not bloom. They turn to mush if that happens. So I will hope for very mild temps from here on out. But it only a hope. This is much too warm for right now.

Crossing my fingers.

My lilies are way past using just mulch to save them if it gets too cold. There are some really big noses coming up ~ eek! The last 5 days were 80* or above, the magnolia is in full bloom and already falling apart from wind and now, rain. Praying for a couple months of mild temps. Confused
Where are we going, and why am I in this hand-basket?

Frigid here on the West Coast. Can't even get out of the 40s on most days. Even so, there are a few noses poking out.

Daffodils blooming, magnolias buds swelling. I had to take the leaf mulch off to save them from the moisture and slugs! I love spring just as much as everybody else, believe me. But right now, I am wishing for 30-40 degrees and gradual warming from here on out. I can already count the buds on many, many of my tree peonies. It is just unsettling. Trying not to worry. Mag and I live only about 80 miles apart so I'm pretty concerned too!. Never have seen it like this for so long. I'm set up so I can tarp, tho, with up supports and stakes. But its a heck of a bother ( a two person job ) with 18' X24' tarps that need to be taken down every day. I wonder how Dr. Griesbach ( who lives half way between us) is coping--he's in the same boat we are. Rita, those Red Alerts are always my first up here too. Lots of little babies coming too--Great!

Edit--spelling.

That's how I document history (2007), the year it got down to 18 degrees and some lilies turned into mush. I remember protecting them with blankets, plastic, buckets, anything I could find, still, there was no protecting them from temps as low as those.

We have no control over mother nature. But if the warm trends continue, lily season should be done by July! Well, we just have to hope for the best. It was so mild too this winter that the LOs look to have tripled! That is, if the weather cooperates.

Weather has been a bit strange for you too pard, hasn't it? Are you usually this cold? Wet, yes. But cooler temps? I think in Seattle, they may have had more snow than we have this year. Now that is very strange.

Dr. Griesbach is such a nice man. I am a fan. He lives very close to a nursery I frequent as well Smiling

I haven't met The Good Dr. but I hope to view his fields in bloom one day. He has been generous to NALS and to myself. I sent him fan mail once and got a nice reply. I always think people should know that you appreciate them, when you do. I have many creations of his in my garden and it (the garden) wouldn't be the same without them.

Lily people are very nice. You are very right.

Regarding lilies popping up, you all need to see this pic that Pard posted in the data base:

That is a cool pic.

Mags ~ Not that I recall, but there were so many big names in the mix. (that's why I asked *Blush* ) Now that I know better who's who, I'm looking forward to meeting others that I may have missed in WI. Having NALS in Iowa next year will help to put more faces to names. And I hope to meet some of the folks here in the forums.

I can see by this, you all do it pretty hard,...,i just get used to a 3-4 week variation each year, although this bloom year was very advanced and most years are the same,..,for show reasons, this year added some 'pizzazz' and made it the best show year ever,.,hope everything works out for you all-Anthony Thumbs up
