I had been wondering about that myself so decided to see what I could find out. It is good to know even if I don't want to eat my ornamental peppers someone might pop one in there mouth and now I won't panic if that happens.

for the past two years i have been planting what is now called ultra hot pepper seeds.

this year i will try
bhut jolokia - tried these 2 years ago with terrible results
trinidad yellow scorpion
7 pot moranga blend and dougla blend - two years ago i got 200 ultra hot peppers from oen plant after hving so much trouble getting them to grow.

i forgot to add that , although these are not considered ultra hots i also will grow big bomb hybrid and last year i went to an italian restaurant in long island ny and they had a hot pepper plant growing inside the restaurant. i asked and got permissin to take a few peppers off the plant and i saved the seeds.

Herbie--what do you do with all of these ultra hot peppers?

I'm a pepper wimp, so I start very mild peppers. I grow paprika, ancho, aleppo, and holy mole. I love to make sauce with my peppers, so try to find those that work well in mole, etc. It's so fun to experiment with recipes.

The only hot peppers I grow are ornamental--Black Pearl, Medusa, Purple Flash.

linda - i mix them with other peppes ahat are not as hot and even ith seet bell peppers to make my own hot pepper sauce. my son chris loves them and i give jars away at work. my pepper sauce, while very hot has a delicious taste to it whch doesn't cover p what food you are putting it on, unlike sauces you buy in the store that are hot but taste losey. LOL

actually, with my recipe you can use whatever peppers you want, they don't have to be ultra hot.

the recipe is in my wifes cookbook but if you are interested i'll gladly send it to you.

Peppers have really struggled here this year for some reason. The only one of mine that's really thriving is a variety called "Fruit Basket" that I have in a mixed containers with a dwarf tomato, some basil and nasturtium. I lost all of my jalepeno, and a couple of bell peppers as well, for no apparent reason. I finally have 5 pepper plants that appear to be growing OK, but something keeps eating my peppers before they can mature!

WOW! Patti!!

Can I beg some Alepo seeds from you this fall? I bought 3 a couple of years ago from the Chili Pepper woman in Indiana, and all 3 of them were different... so I have NO clue which was the "true" alepo.

I'm only growing a few, bhut jolokia, Chinese 5 Pepper, Banana, Yellow Sweet and Green Sweet.

WOW!!! 178 pepper plants? I couldn't get 6 plants to grow this year. I'm impressed.....

Melissa-everything I've read indicates that "aleppo" peppers refer to peppers from a particular region, and not one specific variety. That may account for the difference in your peppers you grew from the Chile Lady.

Linda, she says it is a specific pepper.... and I think she thought I was crazy. LOL

From her website: ALEPPO
This Syrian cayenne has been requested year after year and I finally saved
enough seed to offer it this season.

I wanted to grow them because of the Aleppo pepper I get from Penzey's. Here is their description. LOL
Aleppo Pepper
This Turkish crushed chili has an ancho-like flavor with a little
more heat and tartness. Aleppo Pepper
is also known as halaby pepper.

I only have one banana, and one Anaheim pepper this year. But, I've found a pimento pepper at baker street seeds. It looks yummy, has anyone grown it? I ordered seeds. A little late to start, better than never.

I'm only growing 4 peppers at the moment. I might pick up more plants next month because I am not having any luck with pepper seeds. Might need to try a different method, but I don't know of any others than sticking them in seed starting medium. Although I've also tried potting mix on the bottom and seed starting mix on the top. Fail every time, but I can get other seeds to grow, so I really need to learn this eventually. The perfectionist in me can't take so many failures, especially with my FOOD. (Not counting the burnt pot of beans and slightly overbaked muffins last night.)

Two sweet peppers are a snacking pepper - those little ones I love for salads. And yellow peppers. I don't ever buy or grow regular green bell peppers because they have a bitterness I don't like. Probably should try some other varieties before fully committing to disliking them. I do have room in my garden for a few more plants, or seeds.

With fierce determination I am stating, I WILL learn to make rellenos this year. It is one of my favorite foods and I've never made them. I got a Anaheim pepper plant and a Sorrano pepper plant just yesterday when I had to go to the pharmacy and the car decided we needed to go to Walmart. So the car made me do it. Honest. (That's my story and I'm sticking to it!)

I will still keep trying to grow peppers from seed because I need more than the few plants I have will produce. Maybe having older plants to tell the scared seeds what to do will help. My seeds always seem to do better with other like plants, just as I usually have better luck growing more than one plant. My theory has no basis in fact, but I'm sticking to it because it makes me feel better and my plants really do grow well, even if it is just coincidence. Shhhh. Don't tell the plants.

Maybe I should trade some of my seeds for some other varieties. Having another mild pepper would make the roommate happy. I am bored with jalepenos but wouldn't mind a couple more hot peppers. I hope the wind dies down enough this afternoon to plant my new peppers. It was already dark by the time I returned home with them last night. So, I spent a little time explaining to them what will happen while tucking them in for their night in the living room. Waiting for it to warm up to introduce them to the gang and tucking them into their new home.

I have zero peppers at the moment, have some good jalapeno seed if I bother.

Ghost, Trinidad and "like" make great potted specimen plants in the landscape. My first Ghost was one of the prettiest plants in my lawnscape errr... yardscape. Beautiful and remotely edible.

"Remotely edible", that's for sure, Wes. HOT, HOT, HOT.

I just have my usual favorite, 'Giant Marconi', and the sweet and hot banana peppers this year. I seem to be the only one who eats them around here. Confused
I garden for the pollinators.

Hot peppers are not for me. I can't eat them. So I don't plant them.
