I don't know if it's the heat and humidity here or what..but the plants are just going crazy all of a sudden.

Our crazy weather has the orchids as frustrated as I am. Nothing is "normal" here. When my boys were in school, Sept. was always the hottest, smoggiest time of year...just as school started. It was the same when I was in school. Now....who knows. We've had heat waves in Dec./ Jan., and any time I plant new plants I can almost guarantee a sudden heatwave. I have a new bloom on Brassavola cuculatta too, but the picture was bad, and my Sobralia 'Madeira'(?) still has a few blooms when it usually does it's thing in a couple of weeks, then quits. Every thing is just out of sync.

Oh that's it Carol, I am so jealous! Brassavola cuculata is one of my very favorites. The frilly, open shape with the thin, elongated segments make that such a special flower. And it has the nerve to be fragrant besides?!?! Wonderful. Thumbs up

Remember me? My orchids shut down in this heat and have refused to bloom. It's still hot but I have noticed spikes are developing and I found a couple of blooms yesterday. The first is a nodosa hybrid, Rhynchobrassoleya [Rby.] Sherrie Styles 'Son Shine':

Such lovely orchids everyone. I can agree with Jim - it's hot plus we get monsoonal rains almost every afternoon. I'm just glad mine are alive.

My goodness, two MIA's showing up in one day - welcome back Jean and Jim!

Wish we were getting more monsoonal rains where I am, I've hardly been able to turn off the irrigation this summer for more than a few days here and there. What downpours we do get only last a few minutes. That said, I've had a fairly good amount of blooms considering the heat - been misting a bit extra on sunny afternoons, and running the fans to keep things cooler.

Your two new bloomers are just gorgeous, Jim. Love the Sherri Styles for that elegant shape and color.

We had a HUGE donation at the USF Botanical Gardens a few weeks ago.
Vern Block (sp?) donated a plant so large it had a specialty built rig. A platform with 2 pipes about 3'wide and 4 or 5' long of nodosa 'HEB'.
It took 4 people to move it into place in the garden. I'll take a photo of it in bloom on Thursday... but in the shuffle this piece fell off.
