Sherrie Styles is outstanding Jim. Also a question, what is this thing you guys in Florida call 'rain'?

You guys in California obviously haven't been paying your dues to the firemen in the sky who douse you with water at random intervals, sometimes 3 times a day . . .

Some folk here would be so glad to send you some rain, Ted. Pretty sure Jim and Lindsey have been getting a lot more rain than Patty and I have, though. Just spits and spats at my house for the last month or so, storms that go by in 10 minutes, and just barely wet the pavement (and the orchids, just enough to encourage rot, not enough to be considered a good watering).

Oh, we're paying our dues...between water bills and taxes. Our fire fighters are dropping as much Fostex as water, and that has to be cleaned off with water, a scarce commodity in much of Ca. I get a little fog most nights, at least. Poor Ted doesn't even get much of that.

I feel badly for you guys out west...
Between the hideous yearly fires and the suffering of plants in the heat and drought...it's enough to make grown adults cry. Sad .
For a change, my house is perfectly located under an afternoon cloud. Usually the cloud would drift by and miss me altogether. So I have been getting really good soaking downpours that last for an hour, giving the Vanda plants just what they need. I saw the first spike yet on Prra. Bangkok Sunset yesterday...and lots of nice new roots everyone else.

We are soaked here in daily buckets of rain this Summer! I see a lot of growth on all my plants, but I also have to keep a sharp eye for those tiniest snails in the mm range on my Orchids. Well, at least they aren't slugs.

The first flower of Dendrobium Lori's Star has opened! I just love the heavy substance and color of these blooms.

When it first opens it is about 2 1/2" but opens a little wider and expands to a full 3".

I found the article on ice cubes and orchids, last page to the inside left, back cover of Orchids magazine!! August 2018 edition, page #640.

So if you receive the magazine it is this months issue.

When you get a few minutes, Bill, maybe you could give us a short synopsis of what they said? I'm curious. Some people seem to keep orchids going for quite a while doing the ice cube treatmet.

maybe the super tightly packed sphagnum moss acts as a wonderful insulator on the roots?

At the recent show, SVOE had a sign Stating "Ice cubes belong in cocktails, not Orchids". I'm sure those vendors/growers get sick of people asking.

One thing I will say about the drought, is that I haven't seen a sign of a snail or slug in the last few years. I just saw the first earwig last week.

Usually all I can see the edge of the marine layer out towards your way. But it actually got to our house today. And all the lizards are hanging around the pergola. They love to get watered

Oh sure. The one page article was by T. J. Hartung and it mainly featured four points.
1. The cold, near freezing temperature is no good when it comes to tropical orchid roots. The shock could damage or even kill them!
2. The water provided by the ice cube would not penetrate very far into the media. When you are suppose to water orchids, the water is suppose to flow freely out of the drainage holes thereby assuring that the root system is thoroughly watered! Roots at the bottom 2/3 or 3/4 of the pot would basically never see water leading to die back and a smaller root system.
3. Depending on just what kind of water the ice cubes were made from, you may be introducing dissolved solids and minerals that would be concentrated in the upper level of the media. You might be watering your plants with the same water, unfrozen though, but by the grower watering properly those things would not be allowed to build up to the same levels created by shallow, ice cube watering.
4. The last point he made was, and maybe it is the best point is how exactly do you fertilize your orchids when you use ice cubes. Do you use ice cubes from a cube tray with the fertilizer in the cube? There comes the question of top layer watering AND increased salt buildup from the fertilizer. Plus no fertilizer reaching the deeper roots. Lastly if you use slow release placed on the top on the media how does it get properly dissolved and distributed by this limited water flow???!!!
Excellent article, excellent!! I tip my hat to you.
Great point for me to share Elaine, great point. Thumbs up

Thanks Bill!... I'm guessing the "Just Add Ice" plant tags don't mention fertilizer.

I've got this cutie blooming this morning. Rth. Solar Flare 'Paradise'.
