Voles like to chomp on mine under the snow. Birds and squirrels only mess with mine if they're in pots - don't eat them, just pull them out of the dirt. Worms push the little ones out of the ground.

I have the same experience as goldfinch, with the birds and squirrel (Bill). And I have seen the earth worms push the plants out of the ground when they haven't formed a good root system yet.

I only have problems with the squirrels digging them up in pots. Sometimes they will take a few bites out of my semps. Most of my destruction occurs from people with dogs walking by or through my yard and stepping on my plants. Thumbs down

Somebody pulled a couple of my little red ones but they were unharmed and I just put them back in.

It's either squirrel, groundhog or raccoon - that's all I have, now that the fence is fixed.

For some reason my plants are just huge this year. These 2 pictures are shown with a quarter for size comparison.

Chris, I know that Mars gets large, but in full sun it also gets very dark here. I was wondering how yours is sited? Is it greenish because it is growing fast or is it the location or a combination?

Mine is usually darker, so I think it's because of the growth rate. The leaves are more elongated this year than usual too. It gets bright morning light, but not direct sun, and it gets early afternoon sun.

I have a clump (Mars) that has not been divided for a couple of years and is now filling an 8" pot. I like them when they get really dark, so I'm moving mine to full sun this year. The past two years mine have been in a little bit of morning sun then a bit of very late afternoon sun.

Speaking of heuffelii, I really like heuffelii 'Kapo'. It's small, but it is very well behaved, which makes it beautiful. Here's a pic, but you cannot tell it's charm from the poor image. I'll have to try for some better pics.

Also, anybody note how closely heuff. 'Sunny Side Up' and heuff. 'Sundancer' look alike. So far, I can't tell the difference. heuff. 'Fandango' has a similar color scheme, but seems to grow larger rosettes. I'm going to put these in the sun and see what develops.

Hi Audrey. It was great fun, wasn't it. Big Grin
Meeting all of you in person only confirmed what I already new. Plant people are awesome, especially semp lovers. Smiling

Chris, mine are huge this year also. I was so surprised when I got home and went out to the beds to see them. Sure did surprise me. There are some very large semps out there this year.

I'll try to get photos of h. 'Sundancer' and h. 'Sunny Side Up' in the next day or two for comparison with both twits and goldfinch's specimens.

Gorgeous clump of h. 'Kapo' you have there twit. I love that one also for it's small size.

Critter, hope you and Sandi get things in control on the semp front lines. It would be particularly discouraging to know it was humans and their dogs doing the damage. Sad

The garden in the first 2 pictures is only 2 years old. I can't believe how fast it filled in! They really do come in a variety of colors and textures.

Gorgeous beds Chris. Can't take any photos of mine yet. They are full of weeds from the month we were gone. Sad Now if it will just not rain, so I can get out there and weed. Then I will take photos. Thumbs up

Tabby, your terraces are going to be magnificent. And it won't take long for them to mature enough to make it happen. Thumbs up

Vicki, they had some really beautiful semps for sale the the Denver Botanical Gardens while I was there. Only a few of them had names. I was so disappointed.
