I've gotten that exact one from MCG recently. Mine was pretty big considering the size of the root ball.

I do know the rules may vary. For example with African Violets,I think they allow two leaves to be distributed, for rooting. But with some Agave, with the time required being rather longer, to reproduce the plants... I just think some do Patent Pending & get their share of the money. I noticed, with 'Cream Spike' for example, it tended to offset fairly rapidly, in pots I saw at a garden center. But they seemed to sell out of all that was in stock, in a relatively short period of time.
If someone is commercially offering plants, be it Patented or Pending, they can be held liable. Ergo the labels. Plants such as perennials, are often divided, by home gardeners. But that isn't the same as reproduction, for sales.
Others. don't bother & simply just want to provide it, for other gardeners enjoyment. Consider what the Huntington Botanical Gardens does, by ISI annual offerings. It is a non-profit (501 3c ?) Botanical Garden... & 'donations' are tax deductible. Though I have no idea how they can ever come up with a reasonable "value" on some of those contributions..

"Cream Spike" is not patented. It does offset a lot as a younger plant, but those offsets take a surprising amount of time to reach a mature posture and size. Bigger (older) plants are going to sell well because people aren't interested in getting a small one and waiting, for the most part.

Actually, dividing a patented plant is considered propagation and thus according to the letter of the law illegal by anyone other than the patent holder, without getting permission from the patent holder to do so. Now, it is unlikely that someone is going to go check my back yard for how many different pots of patented Aloe A or Mangave B, I have created from the one plant of Aloe A/Mangave B I bought, but that might change if I start putting a significant number of those offsets on eBay where relatively simple searches can turn them up.

Obviously those patents are aimed at other large scale plant producers/sellers who have the capacity to mass propagate a plant quickly, not at the back yard hobbyist, but it does not mean that if someone decided they have some time on their hands they could not go after the small scale eBay seller. I think there was a thread where we discussed that whole patented plant thing a while back. My sense of it is that in your own back yard and giving a plant away here and there or even selling one or two, no one is really going to care about, but it only takes one person to decide that they want to pursue stopping that for the proverbial poop to hit the fan.

As to that schidigera that is indeed an amazing price. To me that plant is not rare, but that might just be because of where I am at. I did wonder at that central stripe, I did not know that regular schidigeras came with that. Most regular ones I have seen come with fully green leaves and the characteristic 'chalk' markings on the leaves aside from the threads. Of the 5 or 6 different ones I had at one time I only have one of the Oho etc etc. ones left. All the others did eventually fry here in the summer. I think if I had managed to get them near the base of my shade tree they'd have been fine, but that space is usually unavailable. I have some Opuntia ficus-indica that are now on the order of 10-15 feet tall that I might try planting things at the base off. Not quite the same as a shade tree, but at least it provides shade for part of the day.

Just got some new agaves in today.

Thumb of 2019-03-29/Stush2019/207998

I wanted Agave Striata for some time. Saw it at 'The Succulent Source' at a great deal but didn't want to purchase it during our cold winter months, then saw it was out of stock. Bummer... Then they offered it again and I purchased it a little early but it came in without any problems. I didn't want to wait any longer and loose it again.

Thijs, hope your move goes well. I hope you have help moving your plant collection. I think you may need a backhoe! After moving out, would it be okay if you returned for some more if you need to? Or do you have to get all you can now, which would be a bummer. I just hope the new owners appreciate all the hard work you put into such a beautiful garden. Take all the pictures you can before you start digging up everything. (before and after) for you records and reference.

I will have plenty of help, and officially I will have till the end of April to get what I need out of the ground. The idea is to get as much of it done in one day when the help is available and I will have a little trailer to move stuff. After that I will do a thorough walkthrough to make sure I have got what I want. I am mainly leaving behind stuff that is simply too large to move or Agaves in the process or close to blooming and prickly pears and Aloe clumps that I will just take cuttings from. I have a few solitary Aloes that I will dig up.

The digging will be the heaviest work, but in terms of what will take the most time, I think it will be moving all the potted plants... of which I have a lot.

I hope your plants are handling the heat in their new location.

For those who missed it, there's an agave-related post of note here from the chat thread, with info pertaining to nomenclature:

https://garden.org/thread/view...

Here are the agave pictures I've taken and put in the database since I last posted pictures in this thread. Some decent flower pics in there...

There's also a bunch of older images I uploaded in the same period, if you scan down this page:

Yes I do have to hide them. And 'Mountain Crest Gardens' got some nice agave hybrids and under $10. Had to hold back on just the three of them for now.
Always wanted that 'Frost Bite' for some time since I saw it on Ebay but figured I'd wait till I could find it reasonably priced.
Also got an email from 'Mountain Crest Gardens' offering 14% off my order.

'mcvansoest' I have a few variegated agave that look like yours. So many look a like's on the market with different names, how do you know what you got. I seen one with straight yellow lines called A. amer. variegata and with thicker heavier one like yours called A. ferox Butterfingers. On Ebay several other names that all look alike to me.

I have the 'butterfingers' as well, it is a different color green - that is another finicky plant for me. Still in a pot, not sure it would take the full summer sun here and that is what most of my current plant spots would be (need to plant some shade trees). The plant in my picture looks green than it normally is - possibly something to do with the conditions when I took the picture. It is not the as glaucous grey as many of the americanas, but it does show that in brighter sunlight.

BTW, I still have an A. v.-r. 'White Rhino' pup with your name on it, but this plant is awfully slow, so I am not sure if it is the right time to remove the pup from its parent... I will try and evaluate in the coming weeks.

I figure you might appreciate this plant as well, Agave murpheyi 'Engard':
Thumb of 2020-03-24/mcvansoest/251986 Thumb of 2020-03-24/mcvansoest/bc5e42

It is showing some signs of a rough transition after being transplanted to the new place last April, and it is looking like it will flower in the next year. All the pups got removed during the move. I may or may not have some sitting around (a lot of stuff was put in a pile bare root under some shade cloth, and I am still working through that, it is amazing how long some of these plants just sit doing nothing looking a little sad, but nothing you would expect from almost a year of being out of the ground). Even if I do not have any pups of this one, it will likely make a ton of bulbils, so I am happy to ship some your way when I have them available. Plant does not get too big and is supposed to take some cold and wet.

I also think I saw a pup on the variegated americana if you are interested.

'mcvansoest' ,
Thanks for remembering me about the White Rhino. I didn't want to ask and though it might not have done well for you during the move. I think it best to leave on the mother a while longer till it gets big enough to remove. I know my Sansevieria does best when left on till they are at least 1/2 the size of the mother plant.
Your Agave murpheyi 'Engard', shows some interesting color banding. Bulbils sounds like fun to grow. Looks almost like the 'FrostBite' I purchased last year.

Not the best picture due to them being babies right now.
Not sure if you have Joe Hoak. Got an extra if you want it.

Well be sure to stay safe and secure during these troubling times.

Stush,

I definitely would love to try Joe Hoak, given the sun hardiness of the regular desmetiana it may be a star here, but for plants like that planting season really is the fall. I will however take a look among the collection and see what if any offsets I have sitting around that are in OK shape and might be shippable in the next few weeks.

Same to you: stay healthy and safe. If we all buckle down we will get through this.

That one is mine. International borders being what they are, I can't send you anything. It is a great size for pots. I haven't seen it for sale since I found it originally, except for this page where it is being offered for a small fortune
