Lyn, get a loud Cow Bell. If you slip the clanging noise will alert the neighbors. LOL.

Susan ....

Which photo are you asking about whether or not it is a "wall" ?

Here's the thread where I asked about how to get started planting that area:

The thread "Just Thinking About It" in Rock Gardens forum

The rock wall behind the rose is actually vertical. I can't climb it and now I have a larger deer cage for the rose. I've removed all of the vinca inside of the new cage, but it's going the be a nasty job to clean up behind the cage.

Also, I am going to have to prune back the junipers this year. They are a fire hazard. Another truly nasty job. I have to be very, very careful where I step because I could be stepping off into space and just hanging onto the junipers. I wonder if I am strong enough to pull myself out if I do that one again.

re: cow bell ... Rolling on the floor laughing one neighbor is totally deaf and the other is always gone. If I am going to work in what I call a danger zone, I call a friend and make arrangements to call them back at a certain time. When I was painting the back of the woodshed, the rock wall there kept trying to fall down.

Ginger ... does your dog dig holes in glacier slurry ? I could use some help with that.

It seems like I never get anything done because I am gardening on five levels.

Smiles,
Lyn

Variegated vinca is one tough plant and will be hardy in your zone. It's hardy in mine.

Mrs. J planted it on the slope in my back yard. I never water it, nor do I feed it. The only reason it hasn't taken over the slope is that there isn't enough soil for it to spread further. The slope is mostly rock. Here's a photo I uploaded to the Rock Garden Forum because one of my future projects is to see if I can create an interesting rock garden up there.

Thumb of 2014-02-21/RoseBlush1/fcfa13

Here's a photo of where it has taken over a rock wall that Mrs. J installed. I've managed to keep it away from the rose, but it is climbing over the wall and has invaded the area under my dogwood tree where I want to create a shade garden with heucheras.

Thumb of 2014-02-21/RoseBlush1/b70baa

I don't have it anywhere else in the garden because I am certain it will get away from me.

However, I think the wild violets are worse. Their roots strangle the roots of other plants and if I turn my back on them, they go after the roses.

Smiles,
Lyn

It's the second picture. Is the wall under all that greenery? The caption was this:

Some days it seems like I have rock walls everywhere ... Smiling

Yes, there is a vertical rock wall behind the rose. There is also a vertical rock wall at the base of the slope. There is a rock wall, steep but not vertical, behind the woodshed. There is also a shorter rock wall near the top of the slope behind the woodshed.

Nope, it's not terracing. Mrs. J. used rocks to stabilize the slopes. She put chicken wire over the rocks to hold them in place and then started planting. Chicken wire is very hard on gardening tools. She knew where she put it. I have to find it the hard way .... Smiling

Lyn... you do have rock walls everywhere! LOL. Blinking

You seem to have a lot more obstacles that the average gardner, but you handle it nicely!
