Fred, the Lc. Mildred Rives 'Orchidglade' FCC/AOS is gorgeous!! I love it. But, but - I really like the picture you posted on DG, it showed the whole beautiful bloom, dorsal sepal and all.
Thanks Jim!
Laurel, now that gives one a good idea of the Oncidium sphacelatum, plant and blooms. This is described as giant-sized, quite a plant!
Forgot to comment on Lc Rojo!! Love it. How big a plant is it with all those blooms?? Where could I fit it. I like the curly sepals on the Oncidium sphacelatum. Weird I found sphacelatus in my Gardener's Latin book and it says it means dead, withered and diseased!!!!
Kathy, about the size of my Lc Rojo - the tallest growths measure ca. 15 inches, without spike. It is still in a small basket, measuring about 7 inches across.
My plant was a division ( gift from a friend) from a fairly old plant, the mother plant had been purchased about 1990 or 91. About ca. 3 - 4 years ago lots of these pretty orchids came on the market again, it seems someone had recreated the cross. (C. aurantiaca x L. milleri)
Wonderful show at Ken's house. I'd love to just run over and see them all in person! Does the Miltonidium Issaku Nagata have any scent? The Phrag besseae makes my heart do a dance! I love little salmon phrags! I have always had very few blooms on my kingianum until I wrote down Todd's instructions about keeping it cool and dry during winter. This year I had a decent show after 4 years of one or two flowers. Have you tried that?
I bought this one as a small seedling some years ago, I think this is a second blooming on this plant.
If you look closer, you might notice the freshly cut spike. For some reason it had developed a kink in the stem as it was about 8 inches high. ( overnight) I secured/staked it and it actually bloomed. But the flowers were of poor quality, so I cut it and hoped the second spike would be better. It is!
Love that. Tomorrow my Phrag Noirmont will be open. I want to get Todd to have one because it is a really reliable Phrag! And he needs that right about now.
