Posted the Broughtonia negrilensis on DG and wanted to share it here now that it's almost fully opened. The looong spike is in continual motion with the fan breeze. Must be very attractive to pollinators.

Always love to see that one, especially now that it has a name thanks to Ursula.

I don't post much, but do lurk and read. I'm loving everyone's amazing photo's of their beautiful orchids! I'd love to have a very large greenhouse or conservatory to be able to grow hundreds of orchids and other plants. Until visiting the orchid forum on DG I never realized how many different types of orchids are out there. I don't have any specialty Orchids, mine are all from Wal-Mart or Home Depot. I subscribed to Carmela Orchids newsletter after hearing about the company from someone on DG and they seem to have monthly specials that I hope to take advantage of as soon as our weather warms up for good! This has been the worst winter Florida has experienced in a very long time. Like many folks, I've lost a lot of tropical plants that I didn't have room to move inside. We've had quite a few freezes this winter and still having nights in the mid 30's!! I have a lot of clean up work ahead of me on my enclosed porch, deck and pool deck. I look forward to when I can move the orchids and other plants back outside. I have one noid Phal in bloom right now and this orchid that I bought a couple of months ago at Home Depot, labeled Dendrobium Mandarin Pink.

This is another of my rescued from Lowes Phals it's much smaller than the others, the blooms are about an inch across. I've had it now for 5 years and every year it throws up 3 nice spikes for me.

Just about all of the spikes are in full bloom on my Phaius.

Any day you wake up on the sunny side of the grass is a good day.

Lin: Love your avatar. Here is the best pic I could get of our cardinal having his daily bath. Saw a picture of your Phaius on Plant Files. Is it in the ground or do you lug it inside for the winter? This winter has been absolutely the worst here. We have lots of cleanup to do, but it is COLD outside!

Jean! Hi! You changed your username! Good to see you. That is one gorgeous Phaius you have there! I dug up two of my Phaius and brought them into the back porch, left two or three others in the ground. I don't think any of them survived our horrid winter. It's supposed to be in the mid 30's again tonight and some area's west are expecting frost. You are only @20 - 25 miles west of me over there in Deland, are y'all expecting frost? Or, are you even back in Florida yet? I lost so many plants this winter but my house is small and there was just not enough room to bring them all inside! Sad

You like my avatar huh? I did have my picture up but got sick of looking at myself. I got 12" of my hair cut so the picture didn't look like me anymore anyway ... the Cardinal is much better! I love taking pictures of birds. I have about 14 seed feeders and 3 suet feeders in the yard and fill the seed feeders twice a day. We get a lot of birds year round, common ones like the Cardinal, Blue Jay, Mourning Dove, Mockingbird etc. but this winter I've seen a lot of new ones ... quite a few Painted Buntings (the males look like little rainbows), a couple of warblers, and some others that we don't often see around here. Two weeks ago a Sharp Shinned Hawk got a Dove in the backyard and decided to eat it right there on the ground. I was amazed that I walked to within 6' of that bird with it's dinner and it just ate and watched me and ate some more before taking off. I got some good pic's ... posted a few on the Wild Birds Cubit.

I've seen them, Lin. The painted buntings are amazing!
So sorry you are having such a tough winter in FL. We also had a storm last Wed and got 2' of snow. Many big limbs are down and the shrubs have their bottom branches bent and frozen into the snow. Tomorrow will be in the 40s so I will strap on the snowshoes and try to free branches.

I really shouldn't grumble about our weather with what others are experiencing this winter! One lady on the Wild Bird Forum was just saying they had had 40" of snow this winter!! 40"!!! My goodness, I can't even begin to imagine what that must be like!

LOL, Snowshoes? I must admit, I've never seen those!

Oh, I love my snowshoes! They are aluminum now and smaller than the olden days. It's a joy to just walk across the snow instead of being housebound all winter. Some snow is not good though-when you sink a foot it trips you up! I have trouble getting back up these days!

LOL, I know what you mean about having trouble getting back up. I'd probably not do well in snow ... I've been known to fall down while weeding flower beds and have trouble getting up. Now I usually sit down when I weed. My back just isn't what it used to be ... actually my whole body isn't what it used to be! Grumbling I often wonder if my DH weren't around to help me up what I would do. I guess I'd just have to sit on the ground and wait for someone to come rescue me. Actually nowadays I keep my cell phone in my pocket when I'm out working in the yard ... hopefully I won't have to use it to call for help while doing yard work, how embarrassing that would be! *Blush*

I will be 62 in a couple of days and a year or so ago my youngest sister sent me a link to do an on-line real age test. I filled out all the information and I think it said my real age was 80 something! Geesh, I didn't think I was in that bad of shape! My backyard neighbor is 79 or 80 and she sure doesn't look or act it. She can run rings around me! I find I get a little slower with each passing year but feel grateful that I don't take any medication except advil for the occasional headache or aches and pains of arthritis.

Love that noid, beautiful colors!
