Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing I love to take pics of all kinds of insects and spiders, but it really can be challenging to get them to hold still.

Any advice re scorpions? Our family is going to Mexico for a family vacation, staying in bungalows with thatched roofs in the jungle. The owner advises being cautious about scorpions. I've picked her brain as much as possible, and thought I'd post here as well. So far: use the mosquito netting when sleeping, wear something on your feet especially at night, shake out towels and other items that have been draped over railings, keep your eyes out. She says a scorpion sting is slightly worse than a bee sting and lasts longer. She also says they are nocturnal so be extra cautious after dark. There is a medical facility quite close by if anyone is stung and seems to be having a bad reaction. I'm not overly concerned about it, but looking for any tips/tricks from those who coexist with these rather intimidating creatures. Thanks.

Scorpions are fluorescent under black light. So you could turn out the light and scan your room with a black light to find them.
Here is what they look like under black light.

I have to admit that if I were going to visit Mexico, scorpions would be pretty low on a long list of things I would be more worried about. But nonetheless, I'd be careful about picking anything up that's lying on the ground. They like to get under mulch and pieces of wood, rocks, etc.

Linda, you've got my curiosity -- what other things should we be on the look-out for? We are staying in a fairly (?) safe coastal village but definitely in the jungle. I'm told there are also boas, rattlers, and the occasional coral snake. Hopefully these guys will choose to avoid human contact. But, I'm all ears.

I'm more concerned with the drug cartels and all their various criminal organizations down in Mexico. Their tentacles even reach up into Texas sometimes...recently, the feds have moved against a couple of the well-heeled cartel middlemen here. Both were living the good life in San Antonio. I've heard too many scary stories to set foot on Mexican soil until the cartels are brought down. My daughter doesn't feel that way, however. She and her family went down there last summer and fortunately all emerged unscathed...thank God!

I have never felt particularly threatened in Mexico, although I do take reasonable precautions and try to educate myself on areas one should avoid. I think the Gulf coast is far more dangerous than the Pacific coast, which is where we will be staying. We will also be close to a small village rather than a large metropolis. In the end, people are people. Treat everyone with respect and courtesy, and chances are you will receive the same in return.

I hope all goes well. Flying down is safer than driving, from what I heard.

That's cool Ann, a little army of spiders will be going around your garden eating the bad little bugs, probably some good ones too. nodding
