Here is a new one - a first bloom on a seedling from the Hoosier going-out-of-business ( via a beautiful Christmas present in 2008)
Caulocattleya Paul Vondersaar. ( Cattleya bicolor x Caularthron bicornutum)
The color has darkened some more since I took these pictures, I like it very much! The blooms measure a bit over 3 inches across.

Love that! I seem to like those interspecies catt types a lot. But mine are smaller flowered.

Ursula- do you know about the parentage of dennis kone? Chocolate drop? I love it!
Ursula said:on to a new thread!

My divisions of Blc Dennis Kone 'Lakeview' AM/AOS are opening a couple of modest spikes along with the mother plant. ( Previously posted)

Ursula, What is BLC Copper Queen growing in? Looks to be a basket, any medium? Those roots are impressive indeed!

Good eye Bree! Smiling Yes, C. Chocolate Drop is one of its parent, Blc Painter's Brush the other. They always bloom at the same time too for me.

Janice, there is a small basket in there, totally overgrown and the medium is surely gone by now.
To see the progression, here is the plant in February 2003 (when I got it from Parkside)

Thanks, Ursula! That is one beautiful plant!
So when the roots of a catt grow over the edge of the pot , it doesn't really need to be repotted?

Not if you water "properly". I water until the velamen ( outer layer of orchid roots) changes color. Under my conditions naked roots like that are really dry within 24 hours, so I water pretty much daily. You must have good air circulation and those Cattleyas really want to be sunny.
Right now I see lots of really good root growth on many of my Orchids.

Depends on how you want to water. If the roots are exposed you must water more often. Oops we cross posted!

Kathy, we essentially said the same thing!! I agree!
If you are watering on a very different schedule/less often, then Bark or other medium would be better suited.
My watering practices are geared to Vandas with their long free roots and I also water lots of mounted "Botanicals"/species, so I treat many of my Cattleyas essentially also like mounted orchids.

Ursula, do you water by hand with a sprayer?

Janice, my rainwater vessel has a proper faucet, so I can pressurize the system ( to 20 psi) and water with a hose which has the usual sprayer attached to it. Very similar as you would water outside with a hose.

Good stuff Ursula, hard to pick favorites out of that lot, they are all standouts or would that be outstanding.

Kathy, Vandofinetia White Crane is lovely and the spattering of purple on Den. Maiden Charlotte adds a nice touch.
