My only curls are on my Phrags. I actually have no St Swithin types. But I do keep my paphs in morning sun and take them outside in summer (they are all outside in summer). http://cubits.org/orchids/page...
Here's Phrag La Vivace Epicure 'Phyllis D Turner' and Paph henryanum which are in bloom now.

Thanks Bill- See the 2nd flower down in my Helvetia pic...the petals open not twisted then twist after a day. Paphs are my passion, my fav. orchids by far.
Kathy do you have mainly plain leaf paphs or the patterned leaf ones? I have my paphs under 80% shadecloth and bottom shelves and they still seem to get to much light.
Jim- what problems do you have with paphs?

That is an impressive list Kathy. I've managed to kill at least 1/2 of them Grumbling . I really like lowii, but I always manage to break the spike because of it's rambling nature. I lost the one I had this spring to erwina.

Bree, the paphs grow fine but refuse to bloom in our climate. I only have three or four and won't buy any more. I could grow them in the house but don't want to do that. I'm not a big fan of house plants.

I'm not sure if it is the heat or the humidity but the folks up north have many more blooms than I. If I do luck into a bloom, it's in the winter.

Hi all, I guess I should have posted here first to introduce myself, I looked around and just didn't find it until Boojum pointed me in the right direction. I'm Neal, I grow mostly Odonts, plus some other cool growers. I got started with orchids growing a few Cattleys species on the glassed-in back porch where I used to live in Palo Alto, CA. One day a friend told me about Rod McLellan Co, then a huge orchid grower in South San Francisco, and the obsession began. Pretty soon the kitchen room table has covered with Phals and a few other things and I built my first greenhouse. That filled up with Cattleyas and various species orchids. We moved to E. Palo Alto in the 80's and I built a larger greenhouse (about 500 sq ft) and eventually switched over to growing Miltoniopsis and weird species. An unfortunate event a couple years ago (cause by a power surge that fried my exhaust fans and most of the internal fans and controls) opened up a considerable amount of bench space, so I decided to get into Odonts, which really have always been my favs (but generally hard to get and somewhat expensive to get good ones). I grow mostly in coir, but have been experimenting with growing in redwood fiber (gorilla hair) after seeing great results by my friend Tom Perlite of Golden Gate Orchids. I'm a member (and past Pres.) of the Peninsula Orchid Society. When I have time, I attend the Santa Clara Valley Orchid Society meetings and occasionally the SF Orchid Society meetings. We are lucky to have five active orchid societies, plus Cymbidium and Paph groups here in the Bay Area. Right now I'm looking forward to attending the Pacific Orchid Exhibition, coming up in early March. Well, that's it for now, thanks for letting me join you. Here's a pic of the latest thing to bloom in the greenhouse,

Welcome Neil. It will be interesting to see your posts since my climate is very different than yours and thus I grow warm season orchids. It is always good to see different plants. I haven't spent much time in your area except for a year in Monterey at the language school back in 1985-86.

Welcome, Neal. Sooo looking forward to your info since I am admittedly a murderer of Odonts! How long have you been growing orchids?

I've always wanted to connect more to SF resources since I have a lot of family there. When I go, I have never known where to see/buy orchids since no one is into them from my family. I once wandered around with my sister in Sonoma looking for an address...

Hi Neil, Your ondont's are so much nicer than the couple of Wildcat clones you usually see around here. Please keep those pictures coming. I wish I had the room to grow more of that type.

Bill
