Yeah, fabulous plants, good color, nice and full. I like the way the grow lights serve a dual purpose for photography, like the aloes are already pre-staged for their portraits. Smiling

Loving the way this marlothii develops, just now starting to leave the distichous juvenile form in a 10 inch pot

Thumb of 2024-02-04/Baja_Costero/f73a22

Its sister seedling has already formed a proper rosette, this one is just a little late to the party. I think I will grow both to 12 inch pot size so they will be extra hefty for installation.

Sister seedlings here (6" pots) during the peak of the growth season

One just a bit stressed, not quite sure why, there have been many changes with the move and the onset of regular rainfall. Considering moving the greener one up a size, now would be a good time but maybe I'll wait until next year.

Finally here is hereroensis (10" pot) flowering quite late, like it was going to skip a year but then changed its mind when we got proper rain.

What's left of the arborescens after removal of mite problem

Thumb of 2024-02-05/Baja_Costero/93c497

Both plants in the public garden.

For what it's worth, looking 15 years back in time, those plants were installed way too close together: Yucca, polycarpic agave, 2 tree aloes, prickly pear. 5 large, long lived succulents where 3 would have fit better.

My mite battle continues. As my plants are indoors, I am a bit limited as to how much i can treat. I think I am in that paranoid stage where everything looks like the problem D'Oh!
I have lost two from the spraying /watering I have done in winter , but on the whole most plants actually look better for it . Trying to stay positive, here are a few more pics I took at the weekend 😀

Thanks 👍
Mites are difficult because they can take months to show up , by which time you may have already seeded the next plants. Some do preventative sprays , but I am not a big fan of spraying chemicals what are similar to nerve agents around me or my plants . I will spray once when I get back to the greenhouse in rhe spring and again 3 days later to catch any newly hatched mites . I won't spray again unless I have to . A few plants are in quarantine in a different part of the house now until I feel they are mite free
I am not going let any plants leave my collection for a few months , people are very scared of mite here in the UK , they are right to be because we don't have the treatments readily available

Have not cross pollinate aloes for quite sometimes, as previous results got all Doran like aloes.
From now onwards I will only work on the 3 not common type. Get 2 fruits on this one, the father is Christmas Carol.

This flowers in our area from now through April; I have been thinking it is Aloiampelos cilliaris. Am I correct?

Yes, I think so. The distinguishing feature of ciliaris is the fine cilia on the back side of the leaf sheath. So look close at the base of a leaf where you can, so you can see this.

I kind of prefer the gray version, if it wasn't sunburned or whatever.

Today I burned through a lot of pumice, moving 3 aloes to 3 gallon pots (containing ~10 liters each) and 1 aloe to a 12" pot (15 liters).

Two cuttings from the fall, now rooted (Cynthia Giddy and cameronii, for color), two tree aloe seedlings (castanea, marlothii). These are all going in the ground when they fill the new containers. I have more tree aloes to deal with, but this is progress. Smiling

Just for fun, a bifid inflorescence in the public garden (2017 photo, mid February)

Yes, the grey color pup has sunburned, I have to admit that the triggering of stress color (esp. In aloes) is not strong sunlight, but it's the changes of light, heat and humidity. The mother plant has much more light than the grey one, and these group of siblings also have more light.
