New to me in 2022. Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds. Transplant carefully (taproot) - Grow on in early spring, in rich soil with moderate moisture. So I did that, but the transplant of the little seedlings did not go as well as I'd hope. I think the nearby wood mulch was too drying and competing for nitrogen. THIS year, 2023 I will winter sow and let them get a little bigger, but not too big, because of the taproot. I will mulch with finely divided leaf mulch. That should help. March 4, 2022: Seeds sown (WS in jug. Seeds from Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds.)
March 21, 2022: Seeds germinated (Showing green leaves in WS jug)
January 17, 2023: Seeds sown (Will use good soil for planting and mulch well with finely ground leaf mulch this year.)
February 1, 2023: Seeds sown (New sowing, WS in Dixie cups in tote.)
February 12, 2023: Seeds sown (Tried the stones & sand method of direct sowing today. Planted in front garden bed, south east, to the left of our Star Magnolia and behind it.)
March 31, 2023: Transplanted (Winter Sown in Dixie cups tote, sprouts have 2nd sets of leaves. Planted with cloche protection outdoors in front yard new bed. Reference: https://frostdate.com/zone/6a/...)
May 1, 2023: Transplanted (Set out in several garden spaces in the front yard, after hardening off for a few days outdoors.)

Ranunculus Aziz Mix - Floret Farm suggests pre-sprouting the corms before planting to give plants a jumpstart, and ALSO, for colder climates that cannot plant these in the fall, we can have flowers a few weeks earlier than with non-pre-sprouted ones.

Floret Farm excerpted note and link for the full article:
To presprout, fill a flat-bottom seed tray half full of moist potting soil. I planted the plumped corms (soaked for several hours) into the soil. After they sat in the garage (40-50°F for 10 to 14 days, they sprouted.
The corms swelled to twice their original size and developed little rootlets. I planted them into two pots and put the into a cold frame to grow.

Full article: https://www.floretflowers.com/...
March 17, 2021: Seeds sown (Soaked the corms for several hours, changing the water 3-4 times. Planted in a planter box, keeping in the garage until the feeder roots emerge. Keeping moist.)
April 1, 2021: Seeds germinated (Sprouts showing.)
April 5, 2021: Potted up (Potted up, two pots, placed in larger cold frame.)
March 30, 2023: Obtained plant (Ordered a new batch of corms for 2023 as the 2021 experiment growing ranunculus didn't work. These are classic Ranunculus buttercup bulbs from Willard and May, Minnesota, bought on Amazon)
March 31, 2023: Seeds sown (Put in water with bubbler for 4 hours, planted in soil in trays in greenhouse. Will endeavor to keep tubers (corms) cool, around 45 degrees.)
April 15, 2023: Potted up (Sprouted tubers potted up.

THIS time I've got rooted tubers, (in the cool garage for 2 weeks). We have a couple weeks of cold to grow them on for a bit. Maybe I'll get a few buds, maybe I won't, but it's worth a go!)

New plants and seeds
New to me in 2024, for front yard landscaping.

This fragrant, highly disease, fragrant resistant beauty is raved about in the cut flower circles online, a sought after David Austin variety. I've ordered 3 arriving today and will report back on how they do in SE Michigan. Characteristics include opening first with a slightly yellow tinge, then full open white & cream colors.

It is repeat flowering and is described on the website and elsewhere having a medium-strong, fruity, citrusy scent. The blooms are medium, shrub size 4ft 3ft Full, lush blooms, with a petal count of 80. I will be using it in a mixed border. It can also handle some shade.

April 27, 2024: Obtained plant (Ordered in the fall. Arriving today by mail.)

My photos of the gray-green foliage that goes with the plants I have. Once established, they seed freely, but are not invasive.

Yes, they are drought-tolerant and disease-resistant. Mine are a sunny golden yellow. and grow to about 2 to 3 feet tall.

Easy care, low maintenance, though dead-heading produces more blooms and a more vibrant plant.

Tolerates dry soil, not fussy. Needs some water during drought.
Full sun to light shade and well-drained soil is pretty much all you need. They don't seem to need much fertilizer.
August 2, 2021: Transplanted (Into partial shade in north side garden that gets eastern in the morning and some sun until 2 or 3 pm. Winter sown. Transplanting alongside Black-eyed Susan. Will add Pennsylvania Sedge in the spring.)

Perennials
New for 2021. Grew four plants over the winter from green cuttings. Salvia microphylla, sweet smelling perennial. Tender perennial grown as annual in the north. Hardy to just 7a.
Best to overwinter in 6a from cuttings (which I do.)

Lovely black currant scent. Striking cerise red flowers. Bushy perennial habit - but is a tender perennial not winter hardy in 6a.

From Garden.org here: "Salvias are a large group of garden plants that includes annuals, biennials, perennials, and shrubs. The perennial salvias are mainstays of the midsummer garden border. Another common name is sage."

A relative of the familiar kitchen sage, flowering salvias produce spikes of small, densely packed flowers atop aromatic foliage. These heat- and drought-tolerant beauties bloom from early to late summer in shades of blue, violet, red, pink, and white. Plants grow 18 inches to 5 feet tall, depending on the variety.

Salvias: Easy care/low maintenance. Good for cut flowers & attracts hummingbirds. Tolerates dry soil. Will grow in full sun and very well-drained soil.
October 31, 2020: Winterized (Took softwood cutting today and 2 weeks ago. Planted the Salvia in a sheltered spot today surrounded by feverfew. We'll see if it will survive the winter. Hopefully it will regrow from the softwood cuttings if not.)
June 3, 2022 - June 10, 2022: Transplanted (Transplanting cuttings overwintered indoors.)
October 12, 2022: Cuttings stuck (Made a second set of cuttings as first set stuck Oct. 1 dried out. Placed in greenhouse.)

October 16, 2023: Cuttings stuck (Four Salvia microphylla 'Hot Lips' sage plants stuck and placed in basement in bags. A continuation from 2021.)
February 1, 2024: Cuttings stuck (Three or four new salvia cuttings stuck, snipped from the October cuttings which took. Have placed in pots to grow on. )
February 14, 2024: Cuttings took (Looking good, growing well. Cuttings setting roots. Adding LED light to grow on until it is warming in the greenhouse. For now growing in the basement.)
March 27, 2024: Potted up (Transplanted and moved to the greenhouse. Doing well, overwintered well.)
