[ Tropical Pitcher Plant (Nepenthes 'Ventrata') | Posted on November 28, 2022 ]

Believed to be a naturally-occuring hybrid but taxonomically unplaced at this time.

[ Foxglove (Digitalis purpurea 'Dalmatian Purple') | Posted on November 13, 2022 ]

My plant of this must be very happy in its location, as it has produced quite a tall bloom stalk the first year after planting as well as half a dozen small offsets and several more small flowering stems branching off the main one. None of my other foxgloves have done this, so I suspect this one may be more vigorous.

[ Tall Bearded Iris (Iris 'Darcy's Choice') | Posted on November 11, 2022 ]

This Iris is at least a plicata carrier, as evidenced by Tall Bearded Iris (Iris 'Lavender Stardust'). Both its parents are plicata carriers based on their other offspring.

My personal hunch is that this is actually a plicata (and possibly a luminata-plicata), but crosses with other members of the plicata group are required to confirm this.

[ Tall Bearded Iris (Iris 'Reckless Abandon') | Posted on November 9, 2022 ]

This is a known plicata carrier.

[ Tall Bearded Iris (Iris 'Saffron Drift') | Posted on October 28, 2022 ]

I have found 'Saffron Drift' to be a strong grower, although intriguingly it seems that its offspring can be more vigorous than it!

I have used it in a couple of crosses as a pod parent, as unfortunately it never produces pollen for me (a trait that seems to be consistently inherited by its progeny as well). The other trait I have observed appear in most of its offspring is strong veining on the hafts/shoulders.

[ Tall Bearded Iris (Iris 'Frostfall') | Posted on October 28, 2022 ]

In my opinion, 'Frostfall' is probably best suited to being a cut flower. It has a high bud count but very short branches, so all the blooms are held close to the stem (somewhat reminiscent of gladioli). The bloom stem is quite sturdy as well and is more likely to blow over in wild weather than to break. The flower form is pleasing and resistant to collapse under light to moderate rainfall.

[ Tall Bearded Iris (Iris 'Ring Around Rosie') | Posted on October 26, 2022 ]

According to Iris hybridiser Chuck Chapman, 'Ring Around Rosie' is a complicated mix of genes but particularly:

- a recessive ground halo (carotene pigment pattern) gene (distinct to the plicata and anthocyanin control genes)
- a luminata-plicata pattern (combination of pl, lu and gl alleles)

[ Orchid (Cymbidium Black Stump) | Posted on October 14, 2022 ]

This cross (when made as registered) usually produces very dark blooms. However, every example of the reverse cross I have seen produced lighter-coloured flowers.

[ Intermediate Bearded Iris (Iris 'Storm Song') | Posted on October 8, 2022 ]

Although this is classified as an Intermediate, it is marketed in Australia mostly as a Standard Dwarf and is comparable to other SDBs in my garden. I can only assume that it requires certain conditions to reach its registered height.

[ Orchid (Cymbidium Memoria Geoff Laird) | Posted on September 16, 2022 ]

This grex has been made more than once. New Horizon Orchids made it as a tetraploid (4n) cross, which has been the only version to date to produce multiple generations of progeny.

In Australia, there is a triploid version which is pollen sterile and very occasionally pod fertile.

[ Orchid (Cymbidium Cliff Hutchings 'New Horizon') | Posted on August 22, 2022 ]

This was originally a diploid (2n) but a tetraploid (4n) appeared in the clonal run by New Horizon Orchids. They kept this 4n and used it in hybridising. The 4n version has also been cloned and distributed.

[ Orchid (Dendrobium 'Dang Klang') | Posted on August 15, 2022 ]

This is a Dendrobium Phalaenopsis section hybrid marketed under a trade name. It is not a registered grex.

[ Lily (Lilium 'Menton [Div VIII]') | Posted on August 6, 2022 ]

Beware confusion between this unregistered LA hybrid from the EU and the original Asiatic hybrid Lily (Lilium 'Menton [Div I]').

[ Lily (Lilium 'Menton [Div I]') | Posted on August 6, 2022 ]

Beware confusion between this Asiatic Lily (the registered cultivar) and an orange LA hybrid – Lily (Lilium 'Menton [Div VIII]') – from the EU marketed under the same name.

[ Lily (Lilium 'Purple Marble') | Posted on July 8, 2022 ]

Often marketed as an Asiatic hybrid, this is known to be an LA based on the official description provided by the Lily Company BV.

The Lily Nook also notes that it has Lily (Lilium lankongense) in its makeup.

[ Chinese Orchid (Cymbidium 'Hua Kai Fu Gui') | Posted on July 3, 2022 ]

This is not a registered grex but instead an individual clone released by Ten Shin Gardens Co. Ltd.

[ Orchid (Cymbidium Durrell) | Posted on June 21, 2022 ]

Andy Easton's remake of this grex used the alba form of Splendid Cymbidium (Cymbidium insigne) with the "album", or blushed lip, form of Orchid (Cymbidium seidenfadenii). The resulting seedlings all exhibited lip markings consistent with seidenfadenii (either the striped lip form or the blushed lip form), allowing us to conclude that:

1) The "album" or blushed lip allele in seidenfadenii is dominant over the striped lip allele (which is opposite to most pigment-associated alleles in the genus). *
2) Both seidenfadenii alleles are dominant over insigne.

Andy Easton concluded from his cross that seidenfadenii should just be considered a variety or subspecies of insigne. The current reasoning for seidenfadenii being considered a separate species was published in Orchid Digest Vol. 85 No. 4. At this time I am in favour of keeping it separate unless genetic analysis shows otherwise.

* If the "album", or blushed lip, allele was recessive, then one of two scenarios would have occurred: 1) either it shares the same locus as the alba allele and so the cross with insigne alba would produce 100% blushed or alba lips (depending on which allele is dominant), or 2) it is at a different locus and the cross would not produce any blushed lips (either the spotted insigne or the striped seidenfadenii would dominate).

[ Orchid (Cymbidium Darch Dots 'Despicable') | Posted on June 5, 2022 ]

This selection was a seedling flowered by David Wain of Wain's Orchids, who cloned it and made the clones available to purchase. It has been exhibited several times over the past few years at shows in Victoria.

[ Orchid (Cymbidium New Century 'Rosie') | Posted on April 3, 2022 ]

This clone is from the Geyserland Orchids (Andy Easton) remake of the grex.

[ Orchid (Cymbidium New Century 'Spica') | Posted on April 3, 2022 ]

This is from the original make of Cym. New Century by Susu Furuya at Mukoyama. Clones were imported by Guest Orchids and marketed as flowering pot plants.
