[ Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata 'Sea Island Red') | Posted on May 24, 2021 ]

This variety dates back to the 17th century settlers of coastal South Carolina and Georgia. Maintained by the Gullah - Geechee communities until the present. Its emergence back into the mainstream has been accelerated by the slow food movement. Hope to give it a trial this year. Updated September 1. This is a vining plant to extreme. It runs all over the place. Very long season. Not doing much as far as yield. All vine and few peas to this point. Peas are pretty standard field peas, flavor does not stand out from the crowd.

[ Onion (Allium cepa 'White Phantom') | Posted on May 23, 2021 ]

Early white short day onion. Medium size. Greater tendency to bolt than most varieties, about 10 percent. In contrast I seldom have bolting and Chiante grown under the same conditions did not bolt. Really good germination and vigorous plant. Under my conditions , the open pollinated Numex Radiance performed better. White Phantom is a better keeper holding almost two months longer.

[ Broccoli (Brassica oleracea 'Fletcher') | Posted on May 18, 2021 ]

Fletcher a nice early heat tolerant variety. Very small bead and well shaped uniform heads, Performing very well here. A one and done variety, side shoots are as scarce as hen's teeth.

[ Daikon Radish (Raphanus sativus 'New White Spring') | Posted on May 7, 2021 ]

This Daikon is fast. Listed as 60 day DTM, but is only about two weeks later than the 30 day salad radishes. Large and uniform in shape. Nice texture, but extremely mild at present time. Satisfactory as a salad radish, but one of them makes a lot of salads. The leaves are excellent as a boiling green.

[ Spinach (Spinacia oleracea 'Seaside') | Posted on May 3, 2021 ]

Sea side is a poor performer under my conditions. Reflect and Alexandria left it in the dust. Best grown as a strictly baby leaf variety under greenhouse or low low tunnel conditions. Small plant with thick dark green spade shaped leaves. Slow bolting and late maturing with resistance to Downy Mildew. Lacks vigor to grow in open field in my climate.

[ Lima Bean (Phaseolus lunatus 'Dr. Martin') | Posted on April 19, 2021 ]

This an extra large white pole lima similar to King of the Garden. Developed by a Pennsylvania dentist (Dr. Martin) in the the late 1920's. Large vine that requires 90-100 days to mature., Five inch pods with 3-4 beans roughly the size of a U.S. Quarter

[ Squash (Cucurbita moschata 'Rugosa Friulana') | Posted on March 18, 2021 ]

This variety from Northern Italy reminds me of the old-time yellow crookneck. Similar shape and heavily warted. Slightly firmer and dryer flesh. Large bush type vine that can reach 5 ft. Does not have much disease resistance compared to modern hybrid crooknecks, but like the antique warted crookneck has more flavor and texture.

[ Broccolini (Brassica oleracea 'Aspabroc') | Posted on March 16, 2021 ]

This was the first commercially successful broccoli and Chinese Kale cross. Widely marketed as Broccolini, It created such a stir that the actual variety (Asperbroc) was not available to home gardeners for some time. Today there are other varieties from similar crosses, but Asperbroc remains the most popular. The florets resemble rapini but have a much sweeter flavor. It will continue to produce shoots after cutting, similar to sprouting broccoli.

[ Beet (Beta vulgaris 'Solo') | Posted on March 14, 2021 ]

An early monogerm variety that has probably been discontinued. Moneta seems to have replaced it in general use.

[ Snap Bean (String (Phaseolus vulgaris 'Kentucky King') | Posted on February 21, 2021 ]

Classic Kentucky Wonder flavor on an Italian-type bean. The pods are 7" long, straight and flat. The plants are unusually upright and hold the pods high for much easier picking. (57 day) Growing well here.

[ Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum 'White Beauty') | Posted on February 13, 2021 ]

Several seed vendors sell this variety interchangeably with Snowball. I have grown Snowball back in the 40's and again for nostalgia in the 90's. Snowball is a small ( 5-7 ounce) round white with little core so I am not convinced that White Beauty is the same variety. It performs reasonably well for an antique variety that dates back to the the beginning of the 20th century. Sweet mild flavor. Always considered it more of a novelty than a slicer.

[ Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum 'Candyland Red') | Posted on February 7, 2021 ]

An indeterminate currant type that was the 2016 AAS national winner.

[ Honey Dew Melon (Cucumis melo var. inodorus 'Dulce Nectar') | Posted on January 22, 2021 ]

A round 5-6 lb. green fleshed hybrid with a DTM of 90 days. Resistance: Fusarium Wilt Races 1 & 2, Heat Tolerant, Humidity Tolerant, Powdery Mildew. An excellent performer here. Good yield of large melons in a season with excessive rain. Splitting was a a major problem with Galias and cantaloupes, but not a single spit with Dulce Nectar. Flavor is good but may be excellent if not for the wet conditions.

[ Butternut Squash (Cucurbita moschata 'Autumn Frost') | Posted on January 22, 2021 ]

Autumn Frost yields attractive, blocky round, tawny colored fruit with a dusting of natural waxy bloom. Growing to about 6 inches across and 4 pounds each, these deeply ridged beauties offer a thick layer of sweet flesh that stores well. vining plants produce 9‒10 fruit that start out green and ripen to their frosty finish.

[ Zucchini (Cucurbita pepo 'Grinch') | Posted on January 22, 2021 ]

Features an open bush habit with very low spine count. Prolific trailing vine for continuous pickings and extended peduncle for easy harvesting. An excellent shipper. Medium green cylindrical fruit. Early producer , well shaped visually appealing fruit. Very promising start.

[ Romaine (Lactuca sativa 'Willow') | Posted on January 22, 2021 ]

20 days baby leaf.
45 days mature leaf.
Excellent mildew resistance.
Classic romaine shape, long stemmed and flaring to tip.
Smooth mid green leaves.
Thick, crunchy white stems, good weight, providing good volume romaine heads for bagging.
Excellent material for baby leaf production.
Vigorous upright habit for easy harvest.
Good bolt resistance.
Tolerant DM 1-35, missing 3, 11, 37.
Fresh mkt Romaine
As of 05/18 2021. Very poor performance under my conditions.

[ Triple Sweet Corn (Zea mays 'Alto') | Posted on January 22, 2021 ]

An early enhanced Se bi-color with slender 7.5 inch ears on a 5 -6 foot stalk. Better germination in cold soil than many of its competitors. Produces well here.

[ Carrot (Daucus carota var. sativus 'Yellowstone') | Posted on January 20, 2021 ]

Yellowstone's 6–8" long roots are deeper in color than most other yellow carrot varieties. Nice, vigorous tops will compete with weeds. Compared to Yellowbunch, it is earlier and shorter with a slightly blunter tip.

[ Carrot (Daucus carota var. sativus 'White Satin') | Posted on January 20, 2021 ]

Fresh market/specialty. Luminous white roots with strong, 16-18" green tops. 10" tapered roots have unique crisp texture and juicy flavor. Roots store well. Adaptable to difficult growing conditions.

[ Carrot (Daucus carota var. sativus 'Burpees A#1') | Posted on January 19, 2021 ]

A vigorous grower but not very uniform, average length is about 7 inches, but some approach 12 inches. Many double roots and/or side roots. Maturity is uniform, but about 20% are culls. On the plus side it is sweeter than most of its competition.
