[ Carrot (Daucus carota var. sativus 'Ingot') | Posted on January 16, 2021 ]

A 75 day 8 x 1.5 inch Nantes type hybrid that does well here. Good flavor. Not as vigorous as Fuente or Ultimate Hybrid, but forms a nice root with small tops.

[ Carrot (Daucus carota var. sativus 'Ultimate Hybrid') | Posted on January 13, 2021 ]

A hybrid Nantes type that performs well. It is early maturing and reliable under my conditions. It is not as sweet as advertised but is average among the varieties that I have tried. It is performing better than Ingot and has similar flavor.

[ Carrot (Daucus carota var. sativus 'Speedo') | Posted on January 5, 2021 ]

A Nantes type, it produces smooth, very shapely roots, 7-8 inches long. The blunt-tipped carrots are quick to size up even in poor soils. Bolt-resistant plants have clean, erect foliage with strong attachments for easy pulling. 65 DTM

[ Cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. capitata 'Platinum Dynasty') | Posted on January 4, 2021 ]

An early 3-4 lb hybrid. Good holding ability. Performance is satisfactory. Does not stand out from the competition.

[ Short Day Onion (Allium cepa 'Fast Track') | Posted on December 30, 2020 ]

A very early maturing yellow granex type that forms Jumbo size bulbs. In the Vidalia growing area, it can be harvested in late March. Uniform in size and maturity. Very low pungency. Resists bolting and splitting. A Vilmorin product. The earliest maturing short day onion that I have grown thus far. More variable in size but absolutely free of bolting. Higher water content, and more bland flavor than main season Vidalia types.

[ Beet (Beta vulgaris 'Vulture') | Posted on December 6, 2020 ]

Vulture Beet is a half-long, cylindrical beet variety with exceptional flavor compared to other cylindrical types. Beets average 4-5″ long and 2″ in diameter.

[ Cow Pea (Vigna unguiculata 'Red Ripper') | Posted on September 29, 2020 ]

An ancient variety that is most often used as a cover crop or wildlife planting. It is decent as a fresh green shelling pea. Both pods and peas are medium size. Shells as easily as Zipper. Plant is average for a southern pea, very vigorous and produces in adverse conditions. It does have a long DTM (90-100 days)

[ Carolina Moonseed (Cocculus carolinus) | Posted on September 25, 2020 ]

While this plant can be attractive in some settings, It is extremely difficult to control. It sends out underground runners that travel in excess of 30 feet at a 1 to 3 inch depth. New vines emerge at intervals along these long roots. It laughs at most vegetation and brush killers including RoundUp. Much more difficult to control than Kudzu

[ Summer Squash-Crookneck (Cucurbita pepo 'Summer Yellow Crookneck') | Posted on September 3, 2020 ]

The summer crookneck is a real antique. It was grown by native tribes before Jamestown. It vies with the White Bush Scallop for antiquity. Both were used as immature fruits as food and mature fruits were dried and used as rattles. It is heavily warted, but one of the best flavored crooknecks I have eaten. Modern derivatives are smooth, but some of the flavor seems to have gone with the warts.

[ Bell Pepper (Capsicum annuum 'Antebellum') | Posted on August 24, 2020 ]

Antebellum has been a consistent performer for me . It sets fruit well and is a good size for stuffing.

[ Eggplant (Solanum melongena 'Patio Baby') | Posted on August 13, 2020 ]

Compact plant yielding 2-3 inch, dark purple, egg-shaped fruits. Designed for container gardening.

[ Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum 'Bella Rosa') | Posted on August 10, 2020 ]

One of top tasting tomatoes with resistance to Tomato Spotted Wilt Virus, Not quite as resistant as Mountain Merit or Amelia, but generally does well here. Good producer of half pound fruits.

[ Pepper (Capsicum annuum 'Arapaho') | Posted on August 1, 2020 ]

An early maturing Cayenne that is producing well in temps hovering around 100 degrees. Large 8 inch peppers on 18 inch plants. Moderately Hot (3000 scu) with an underlying sweetness.

[ Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum 'Saybrook') | Posted on July 19, 2020 ]

A large (8-10 ounce) round red fruit on a densely leafed vine. Minimum sunscald among the varieties that I grew this year. Excellent production. Slightly smaller than Mountain Merit or Dixie Red. On my taste buds , they come in slightly behind those, but still an excellent TSWV resistant variety. Definitely worth a repeat.

[ Watermelon (Citrullus lanatus 'Compadre') | Posted on July 17, 2020 ]

Compadre is the best hybrid type of Crimson Sweet That I have grown. Equal to Crimson Sweet in flavor and texture. Has more disease resistance and is very productive. One of the few varieties resistant to Gummy Stem Blight.

[ Cantaloupe (Cucumis melo 'El Gordo') | Posted on July 11, 2020 ]

This one is Big (10-15 lbs.) and quick (75 days). Very productive ( 4 hills kicked out 16 melons). I did not try for giant melons, but all the early set went over 10 lbs. Developer says 30 is possible with proper pruning and ideal conditions. Classic Eastern flavor, but not quite as good as Athena

[ Eggplant (Solanum melongena 'Amadeo') | Posted on July 5, 2020 ]

Large Black Beauty type hybrid. Grows ok but I did not observe any distinctive advantage over the open pollinated Black Beauty.

[ Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum 'Pamella') | Posted on July 1, 2020 ]

Pamella has a good disease package. The plant is very vigorous and resistant to Fusarium, Tomato Spotted Wilt Virus, Root knot nematodes and southern blight, which limit the varieties that I can grow successfully here. The fruit is small (7 ounces) round, red and very uniform. Taste is nothing to write home about but acceptable. Fruit is harder than I like, but better than some of TSWV resistant varieties. Vine is indeterminate, long internodes, so I have spent lots of time tying them up. They are so long and limber a cage will not contain them. Major advantage is earliness. They are ripening with cherry tomatoes almost two weeks before my main season varieties will come on line.

[ Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum 'Sweetie') | Posted on June 28, 2020 ]

Nice red cherry, but unfortunately has no disease resistance. Other than the crown, set no tomatoes The plant succumbs quickly to a combination of Fusarium and Tomato Spotted Wilt.

[ Sweet Corn (Zea mays 'Essence') | Posted on June 15, 2020 ]

A main season Se bi-color that is an average performer here. 80 DTM. 8 inch ears. good flavor.
