Have questions about the seeds someone else is offering? Here is the place to discuss it! Or maybe you just wanted to comment on or post example pictures of some seeds that have been listed? You can do that here, too! (Note, if you want to post a picture for one of your own listings, the best place to do that is in the listing so that people see it as they are bidding, but it never hurts to generate some pre-interest here, as well!)

This is not the place to post your seed wishlist.

You can post them here, but the thread that is set up and designed for your wishlists is the "List of Desired Seeds for Each Member" thread. That is where people will go to get an idea for which seeds are desired, so anything posted here might get buried, might not be seen by the 'right' person (who has your desired seeds), or might not be seen in a timely manner.

Just a plug for a nice pollinator plant. My white snakeroot is blooming now. Besides the tasselflower it is pretty much the only pollinator friendly plant blooming this time of year in my garden. The bees just love it! I always make sure I have several large patches of it to entice the bees. It does spread seeds by wind but if you are worried about it just pull up the plants after blooming. It is a native plant and the seedlings are very easy to remove if they pop up in unwanted areas.

Oh my, Elena, just today I was looking at how beautiful blooming white snakeroot is and thinking I need seeds. Hilarious! Someone posted a picture of them growing along a woodland path (in the wildflower thread) and they are lovely. Lovey dubby

Wish I could help you but I'd never even heard of a hackberry until I read your post. It looks like it isn't native to NY either. Hope you can find someone who has seeds!

Hope the remodeling goes well (and quickly)! I totally understand if you can't do the swap but know that we'll miss you!

We have hackberry growing here but I don't think it's dwarf, I don't know what species. But I've never actually seen the fruit either. I do know that hubby will hack them down when they grow close to large trees which is often the case. Sad hackberry is a host for the hackberry emperor butterfly as Jim probably knows. Smiling

We have hackberry & huckleberry, but I don't remember how to tell the difference. They aren't dwarf but I've never seen any really large ones.

Browsing and looking , I really have to have a few dwarf trees though because of all the power lines and wires here ,
I do have one red oak grown from acorn. that is 12 ft tall after 15 years , has a branch I have to trim though ,
Apples . box elder . eastern forest Tulip popular a few oaks , all grow here naturally , but not all that well ..
I get a few Black cherry also , birds ?

I am getting some seeds and have several I did not get to this year ,

Time to quit rambling here and back to usual ,,

Than tou all for answering ,, I may try the regular hackberry ,

The Beautyberries are ripe. Wondering if anyone will be interested in seeds because I probably won't collect any if there's no interest. These are the native American Beautyberries.

My dad says jam from them is superb.

But he picks them wild.

I'd love to try, but I don't know if I could find room for them.

Beautyberries are such a pretty plant! They may not survive or thrive in Zone 4, but I'd love to give them a try.

How do you separate the seeds from their pods with basils?

I do several methods but will usually start off by cutting off the ripe/brown seed pods and placing the stems upside down in a brown paper bag. To loosen the seeds from the pods, I'll then try closing the paper bag and shaking. That usually doesn't do a good enough job and I will end up rubbing the seed pods between my palms, over the bag. That gets many of them loose. But then I'm usually still not satisfied and will take the stems, one at a time and pry the stubborn seeds from the pods.

Look forward to hearing some easier ways to get the job done! I'm all ears! I'm all ears!

I do the paper bag method, too. They allow seed capsules that may not be quite dry to finish curing. Sometimes if the stems are quite dry and it's a seed that is hard to get out like Salvia or Agastache or Basil, or if it is something with a prickly or irritating seed head like Teasel or Tithonia, I put the stems or seed heads in a large mason jar and shake. The jar offers a little more resistance than the bag. I don't worry too much about what's left behind unless it's scarce, I just scatter what's left for interesting volunteers.

If I pulled all the seed pods off the stalks of the basil, how would I go about separating them then? Whoops, didn't think to leave them attached

The mason jar method might work best for you if you want to give that a try put the seed pods in a jar or canister with a lid and shake the seeds loose. Thumbs up
