I received Bitsy as a bonus plant from Oakes Daylilies, on their website in one place it shows the height as 30", (also on the tag that came with it) in another place it shows the height as 18-20 ". On the data base it shows the height as 18". Does anyone grow this daylily? And about what height does it get for you. I know the height can vary in different places, but this is such a big difference. I don't know whether to place it at the front of the bed or in the back.

I don't grow it, but thought you might find this interesting.
This article states that it is 12-18 inches tall and is nocturnal.

Hi, Alma. I received Bitsy from Oakes in spring 2021, and I emailed them with this very question. They told me that "Bitsy may vary this much in height considering the growing zone you are in. The further south you live the shorter the bloom height."

After I got this answer, I planted Bitsy in the front of a bed. It's been fine there, has increased and seems healthy but hasn't bloomed yet. I hope this is her year.

Interesting about the height being taller the further North one grows 'Bitsy'. Here it is definitely taller than 18" possibly closer to 24" but I don't think as tall as 30" (I will try to remember to measure it when it flowers).

'Bitsy' is reported to have blackish scapes and dark sepal backs. Is that the case for everyone here?

Sue mine is just like that. My scapes vary in height. I never felt the need to measure until now. If I had to guess, I would say the same as what Maurice is getting. Some scapes maybe taller. Mine is in the front next to On And On and it towers over it.

The clump picture for Oakes does look to have the blackish stems, but it's odd they would list it at 30" in one spot but 12-20" at the top of the same page. They also have it as evergreen, although it is registered as semi-ev but of course foliage habit is not necessarily "fixed" (it was hybridized in Texas and a parent of 'Stella de Oro').

Bitsy is fairly new to my garden. The initial scapes tend to be shorter. It reblooms taller (perhaps on new growth) until it's stopped by frost, which was early November here in Tennessee. I'll measure their height when I get a chance. The buds seem to be tipped in purplish, but it's a subtle effect. Maybe that depends on temperature.

I've had BITSY since '95. Inconsistent rebloom (Husbandry? Location?). FFO (Central Ontario @ US Z 4/5) is June 18th (Usually June 23-24th & as late as July 8th?) Despite the time here, I have very few older seedlings from it revealing (NOW that I'm 'looking into' BITSY due to this thread) that it has NOT stood out in any particular manner. NOT measured but recall would place it 'short' at a MAX of 18-20". Scapes & buds are NOT very dark - if at all - as I would have noticed & recorded this trait as I have many such registered cultivars & seedlings I play around with. I seldom make note of DOR>>EV foliage habits hereabouts, but BITSY did stand out one late November (Winter start hereabouts) as being quite 'green still' - thus evergreen? (Certainly hardy!) Lastly, interesting that my notes show that I have recent ('20-'21) seeds + seedlings from crosses with known EE/E's - Begin With A Bang + Vernal Tutone + Little Red Spring Song + Joy Of Spring + Stars My Destination + Early & Often + Numbers Game + a few others. Must've caught me eye in some way. NOW will focus more on BITSY this spring ....

I've grown it for 4 years now. I don't recall it ever being more than 24". And I don't remember the buds ever being all that dark. Maybe a little.

Maybe its height is a bit of an illusion because of how tiny it's blooms are. I don't think a lot of mini's with 1.5" blooms have near-2 feet scapes. Maybe those snall blooms on a 2-foot scape look proportioned like a taller 3-4" bloom???

Mine stands out as a bloomer. Last year mine bloomed continuously from May 25 to July 31, and still added rebloom from Sept 10 to Oct 14. I'm fortunate to have found two or three rebloomers that can do that, but last year, Bitsy was the queen of the garden for contributiing blooms.

This thread should be moved to the Bitsy Plant of the Day thread. All good info, in case people want to look into Bitsy's habits.

Thanks everyone for all of the information on Bitsy, glad to hear she is such a long bloomer. @DeweyRooter, guess we will just have to wait to see if we will be moving ours in the future.

Moving this thread to the Bitsy Plant of the Day thread is not an option and merging threads can create some huge problems so is rarely, if ever, done. I added a link to this thread in the Bitsy Plant of the Day thread.

I have a question about Bitsy. Has anyone else noticed that the foliage on this plant looks like grass as it is developing? I have noticed that descriptions of the foliage on several websites use terms like "grassy" or "grass-like," but I assumed this just meant that the blades of the foliage are very thin (which they are). But I see several of the fans actually resemble grass in the way they grow as well. In fact, I wondered if some grass actually got in there with Bitsy.
