This is the time of year when these little darlings are beginning to set their buds. There are so many hybrid Schlumbergera that it might be fun to share pictures, posts and problems.

I will begin with a picture of a very old Schlumbergera x buckleyi. I have two of these old ones I use as stock plants. Some people call them Fuchsia and others Magenta. I really don't care what they call them. I still think the old Christmas Cactus are beauties.

Lee that is a beautiful color, what is the name of that plant?

Hetty, that looks like the true Christmas Cactus. Does it have a name?

Here is another one. this is the light Orange Zygocactus (what they call them in some places because of the shape of the flowers) You can see the soft points on the stem which indicates the cultivar as S. Truncata and it blooms in October and November. Some call them Thanksgiving Cactus.

The Cultivars S. Truncata and S. Orssichiana have the different stem-segments then the S. russelliana and the S. opuntioides.

Mine is the S. Truncata (Thanksgiving Cactus). I have no idea his name...I picked up a leaf years ago because I fell in love with the deep peachy colour of it.

Oh Lee, that is a wonderful color. You were lucky to come upon it. So many of the plants people have seem to be started that way. I love it! As long as they are pretty and we enjoy them, who cares what they are called. Rolling my eyes.

They are just beau.................ti.................ful! Looks like you keep them happy and healthy.
I wish my camera...better yet, I wish I could take good pictures like those you have. My camera just does not like me, so I use the cell phone and those are just not showing the beauty of these plants.

Tarev thank you so much for showing them forming the bloom buds. I've yet to see one doing that and am hoping this year I will see blooms. My first year not killing them before now.

Tarev, Is this one the same as your one? My sight is not good enough to tell. This one is a Peaches and Cream Zygocactus, one I purchased a few years ago from Hirt.

This one is three years old now. I am hoping for some nice blooms, but I did quite a few cuttings and I may have messed that idea up. Big Grin

Hi JB! Hmm, it seems similar to the last photo I have..maybe it is the same Big Grin My plant starts a bit peach like in color, then when it starts to mature a little more it becomes whiter on the petals. I got mine from a local Home Depot store. Initially looking for poinsettias, but when I saw these lovely thingies, I decided to get them instead Big Grin

Mine aren't setting buds yet, being much warmer here still. Generally they start setting buds in November, and are in bloom by Christmas. This is my plant that I started from cuttings, from a plant that had been passed on from generation to generation, and was over 100 years old. It is the true Christmas Cactus. I placed it outside the beginning of October, so it will start getting the longer, cooler, darker nights, that seem to help it set buds.

I bought this at a street sale the other night because I thought it looked like something I had seen here. Now, I don't think so. What do you think it is? It's looking a little sad because I forgot it was in the back of the jeep and it has been out there since Monday night. I guess I'll have to pot it up and wait to see what it does.
