Usually Amaryllis here does not grow at winter (or grow very slowly), but does not loose leave either. This catch suddenly started to loose a lot of leaves. I already removed 5-7 dead yellow leaves, and it seems to be it is continue. Some bulbs lost all its leaves. Also leaves are very flat, and not growing up as they should be.

Why it that ? Maybe over-watering ?? It was under the rain for about 2 month, not plate was removed, so was no excess water in the ground.

I have another pot, also loosing leaves, but not that bad (at least for now).

Looks like it may be going dormant

It is normal. Some of my amaryllis has no leaves right now. It comes back better towards Spring. Just let it continue on receiving as much bright light so the remaining green leaves can return more energy to the bulb for its future growing needs. Remove all the yellowed ones to make it cleaner.

I also take this time once all the leaves are gone, to gently remove those older bulb sheaths, they are like onions anyways, lots of cover.

Looks to me like it going dormant. I would withhold water for a while. It is possible they will lose all their leaves. Most of mine do that, and then do not grow more leaves for about 8 weeks. Your bulb may just be resting. If it were me, I would not worry about. The only other thing I would do is to stick my fingers down into the soil and make sure the bulb is still firm. If it is still firm and not soft/mushy, then I say it is probably going dormant.

Both of these bulbs have been dormant for about 10 weeks - they are just starting to grow again. The one in the front is starting to send up a scape, and the one in back has a leaf that is just barely starting to poke through.

@cwhitt@ I checked the main big bulb (all other bulbs I cannot check, they are too much in the ground) , it is very hard and light green color.

@crawgarden@ @tarev@
I growing amaryllis for several years for now, it never got dormant, always were green leaves in the summer. Also I re-potted a big bulb from this lot in a separate pot, all leaves are green. Maybe this winter is different, it is much more rain that usual, and much more cold days and nights.

As I said before, we has a local strain here of this plant, that is different that you have in US. It will never bloom from the bulb (if you buy it, or have it from previous year) , it will first grow a lot of leaves and maybe bud then. You can never time it to specific day, it always bloom (if at all), between Feb to March) . And also grow bulb in a crazy speed (I had bulb of 1 inch in diameter that grew in 3 month to 1.5 inch in diameter during the local summer).

So loosing leaves it is strange for me.

P.S. here another example of a local speed growth. This is in a winter cold month, inside a home, near the window, no direct light. Leaves are about 10 inches long, almost a month after planting a dried bulb that I bought online (bulb is less that an inch in diameter).

Good to know the bulb seems firm. Maybe it is time to lift the bulb a bit and maybe change some of the soil. It seems going dormant anyways. But I will wait before I do that, will just let it receive as much light so those remaining leaves can further nourish the bulb.

I think your colder days and nights are probably what threw it into dormancy.

I took this photo today of one of my outdoor pots. These bulbs are in the process of going dormant. The photo is virtually identical to the photo which you posted. You may never know why those particular bulbs entered dormancy, but fresh leaves should appear in the very near future.

Actually, not that strange. The two large bulbs have gone dormant. The little bulb(s) is still feeding off of the bigger bulb and smaller bulbs don't usually go dormant. I would just stick that pot somewhere dark and cool and do not water it for about 8 weeks. It is just sleeping. Those smaller leaves will probably dry up once they get the message they are supposed to be dormant, but either way, I would not worry about them.

Ron, With March here already, and the day length increasing, I don't think that you need to put your pot in the dark for 8 weeks. The center bulbs may be ready to put up new leaves. On Jan 22nd, I posted a photo of my bulbs going dormant, and I removed the remaining leaves. My bulbs have put up new leaves, which are already 10 cm tall. The dormancy was only about 3 weeks. In Israel, you may also have the same situation as we have in Florida. If the Amaryllis go dormant, it is an extremely short dormancy. It this was my pot, I would give it a good watering, and put it in the sun. I bet you will have new leaves by the end of March if not before.

@bsharf@ this is what I did, pot got plenty of water and about sun it is out of my control, we had at least 110 mm rain without end in the last 2 days, no sun in sight. Only today it seems like my plants will get some sun, but it is still very cold.

Some of my amaryllis outdoors are also waking up now, feels like Spring I guess, with our more than usual amount of rains here. Right on track, Spring is just around the corner. Smiling

you were right, big bulbs coming back as well, and with a speed, leaves are growing like crazy.
