Purslane, a Good Weed

By wildflowers
July 1, 2012

Here's another plant that most consider a weed, but let's take a look at all it offers before we start tossing it aside.

I have some of these growing everywhere...in cracks between sidewalks, lawn, beds, etc.
I had googled them and even tasted a few leaves but not sure if I like them raw. I will try them stir-fried with other greens and see if that helps. Thanks for the article.

Great article! I tried to grow this last year and it was just never happy. I'll try again. It's embarrassing when you can't grow "a common weed" Glare

Well, somehow I just haven't been noticing what was going on! Recently I had wondered what ails my purslane plants, which just didn't look very leafy. And just never quite connected its loss of leaves to the fact that I've recently had some chickens move into my yard. Now that you mentioned this...well, the chickens must be eating my purslane leaves! Okay, thanks!

Sherri, did your purslane have plenty of sunshine and warm temps?

Yay for purslane! I always liked the little weeds & let them grow but never knew you could eat them. Thanks! I tip my hat to you.
I am a strong believer in the simple fact is that what matters in this life is how we treat others. I think that's what living is all about. Not what I've done in my life but how I've treated others. ~~ Sharon Brown

Growing up this was a regular salad ingredient both at my parents and grandparents. I didn't know it was Purslane until recently and I agree with your husband about it tasting lemony. Glystritha is a common ingredient in many Greek dishes but I still like it best in salad. Or something to munch on in the garden. It's great to hear it's good for you to boot. Thanks for the great article.

Thank you everyone! Glad to see there are many purslane fans around! Thumbs up

You're welcome, Evan! How nice that you were re-introduced to purslane!

Boo, I must admit, I didn't realize there was an entire forum just for purslane!! But I'm there!

Allison, I hope you find that recipe for Betsy and the rest of us!

Sherri, you're not alone! nodding Like Linda said, full sun, maybe try a little place in a raised bed or somewhere the soil is rich, and where you will be watering regularly ...if you haven't tried that.

Linda, I think you will love having chickens! It took me awhile before I realized why those hens were so relentless to get in the garden until I watched them go straight for the purslane! After that, the cucumbers! Ha!

Ann, I hope you give them a try soon!

Renee', don't you love living out in the woods? I do! I love seeing the critters but they don't come close to the house much anymore, I think it's because of the dogs!

It is beautiful here, and I get to hike the 25 acre wooded hillside we live on. It's like living in a park! Unfortunately, we don't have dogs, so the critters come right up to the house and eat/dig in the gardens. It's a constant battle, trying different things to deter them....and then remembering to keep reapplying stinky stuff.

Sounds nice, Kywoods! It's almost impossible to keep all the critters away, I suppose. Besides an ocassional rabbit, the squirrels are about the only ones that get close these days and they are fat from eating chicken feed. The chickens run them off when they catch them... that is quite a funny sight!! Rolling on the floor laughing

Haha! I think the chickens here are stealth raiders! The plants are in pots and I never saw the chickens around them and also never saw a pot turned over.

here is the recipe from AYankeeCat
I just pickled it in apple cider vinegar with a couple black peppercorns and sliced garlic thrown in for good measure. Let the purslane sit in the vinegar in the fridge for a couple of weeks before you eat. The vinegar is good as a salad dressing, too.

Oh that sounds yummy! I wish I had lamb's quarter growing here! Maybe I should try growing it
...but I'm kinda like Sherri, and can't seem to grow "easy to grow" common weeds! Hilarious!
