Kermit, the salvia frosty kiss went the way of many of my experiments, the compost pile. However, my experiment in buying Michelia Yunnanensis Inspiration makes up for most of those that were composted. Will post pics on data base when flowers open. Win some, loose some.

My zone is 7 A. Does this grow for you well in pots or the ground. It says it is good zone 7. We are a definite A with a good amount of winter rain.
I waS also considering gluphea glutinosa. Is anyone familiar with this plant?Texas Heather.
Salvia Amastade will also be new to my garden.
High hopes for my salvia choices for my hummers : Thank You!

@taterpye,

Welcome Welcome!

I grew salvia Silkes Dream before in a container.

Perennial Salvia (Salvia 'Silke's Dream')

I always grow salvia Amistad every year in a large container for the hummers and the gorgeous flowers.

Salvia 'Amistad'

I've never grown the other two you mention.

Blue Sage (Salvia azurea) seed was winter sown in a 1-gallon milk jug on 23-Mar. No signs of germination yet, but that's no surprise; S. azurea needs warmth to germinate and there are below freezing nighttime low temps in the forecast here in northern NV (elev 5700 ft) until late next week. It may be awhile yet, but S. azurea is easily and reliability grown from seed.

I am growing the summer jewel salvias from seed. So far they seem pretty easy to grow.

My neighbor had a white salvia in a pot. She gave me some seeds so I gave her a Pink Porter weed seedling.

Salvias make me sighhhh with pleasure. If I was a plant collector this would be my plant of choice.
I have a new garden. I have lived with red clay— and compost and amend. But 2 years ago I moved from Atlanta to NW Al.
I have encountered "chirt". Grumbling Grumbling Grumbling Grumbling Grumbling Grumbling Grumbling
It is definitely an enemy of most salvias. If I had moola I would replace all my soil but unfortunately—
I have killed more plants in the last two years than the the last 30 years of gardening. Well it feels that way Thank You! for listening.
On a brighter note a friend brought me a gift of 12 Lady in Red salvias. Nice - real nice— sighhhhh Angel

For the next year or so I will be limited to growing in pots while we get settled in after our move. The landscape is just grass right now, so we need to figure out our plan, then implement it over time.
So what are your top three salvias for pots so I can at least enjoy growing something?
Edited to add we will be moving to zone 7b, Dallas area so super hot summers. I will have a porch so can control the amount of sun if needed.

I have these Salvia species started from seed: penstemonoides and cardiophylla. I am trying to germinate roemeriana, azurea and atrocyanea.

I will be growing them in containers. Easy ones to grow in containers are any of the coccinea cultivars, and I have had success keeping alive oxyphora and microphylla in pots overwintered indoors.

I'm in zone 7b, and nearly every salvia I have tried in containers did great. But I've never tried those varieties that get to 6' tall or more. That would need a much bigger pot than I'm used to growing them in! My experience, salvias are about the toughest, most carefree plants you can grow in the south. Only bad thing about them is the deadheading. Hilarious!

Really nice that you look at deadheading that way! I have so much of it to do I look at it as a dreaded chore.Guess I need an attitude adjustment... Ok, I'm grateful I'm healthy and can still garden, and that I have a lovely place/garden to do it in!
In reality I'm usually an optimist... this has sure helped during this pandemic.
Thank you so much for the reminder to look at the bright side, and there's always a bright side. Angel Lovey dubby

@taterpye,

What is "chirt"?

What a wonderful gift of 12 Lady in Red salvias you got from your friend. Lady in Red is one of my favorites to grow. I've grown it in containers, as well as, in the ground. An easy salvia to grow and it attracts hummers.

Scarlet Sage (Salvia coccinea 'Lady in Red')

I have a red salvia in the ground that I am not sure is Lady in Red. I always considered it an annual, but this winter has been so mild here in zone 8 it never really died back. Annual salvias are usually readily available so I will be able to get it once we move and I will definitely try it in a container.
