I misspoke. We have a plant listed under that genus. We don't have enough plants to warrant setting it up with a parent entry.

It was me who raised the question about daylight sensitivity of different petunias in a recent thread. That information can be hard to find. I think it's an excellent addition to our database.

Hurray! Good going Joanne, she certainly is the right person for both Petunias and Calibrachoas. I had never heard of Petcho until today. Thumbs up

I know! All I have there is potatoes and one red-leaf rose.

Zuzu has offered to look after the Petunias & Calibrachoa approvals while I'm gone. I tip my hat to you. Zuzu

Back to petunias: Correct me if I'm wrong, but 99.9% of all modern day petunia varieties are:
Petunia x hybrida (denotes the hybrid origin of the many cultivars)

so, All the modern varieties and different series should all be entered as botanical "Petunia x hybrida"
I see the species varieties are in the database, which are not Petunia x hybrida

Long story short, most of the varieties that you will be entering and/or searching will be Petunia x hybrida

Evan? Zuzu? Dave?

Note: If you are entering in a variety that is normally propagated by vegetative stem cuttings, then you should choose Seed Propagation: Will not come true from seed
These petunias will probably produce viable seeds, but chances are that it will be different that the parent plant

Yes, Joanne. That sounds good. Petunia x hybrida is an accepted species name, so x hybrida does belong on the species line when people propose the addition of new hybrid Petunia cultivars.

Question: A lot of the new petunias for example Phantom, Black Velvet etc are prohibited to be propagated from seed. Should we have that as a choice in Seed Propagation on the data sheet?

Also, in Seed Propagation, should we add "Pinch at "X" weeks

Joanne, imo if Phantom is patented, like Black Velvet is noted as being, I'd think that should be sufficient?

ok,

Here's a question: Do we leave the sowing info (surface sow, Needs light, temps etc) or do we uncheck all that and click will not come true from seed? The plants will produce seed and they probably will germinate. So do we keep the parent petunia data (which will be applied for all petunias) with the sowing info or for the ones that are patented and/or patent pending and are typically propagated by vegetative cutting, the data sheet propagation of sowing current info would be unchecked and only "will not come true from seed" be selected.

Dave,
Is there a way that if I check the Petunia propagation: Seed, that the data fields would be populated with the sowing info. If I check the Petunia propagation : Cuttings, the only choice in the detailed sowing would be "will not come true from seed" and the other sowing data particulars would not be checked

Since there are several hundred varieties of both, cuttings and seed it would be less key punching if the data is auto linked with that data.
