Seedfork said:I walked out in the seedling beds today and noticed this purple bloom seedling had a ton of buds, so I took a closer look. It was a fused scape, looked like two maybe three together, but still not a really flat looking scape like a fused scape often looks. A little disappointed that the bud count won't be like that on all the scapes, but it did have three lateral branches on it. I don't recall having a fused scape with lateral branches.

Also had this bright bi-color.

Wow Larry, that must have had your heart pumping when you saw all those buds (even if it was until you realized what you were really seeing). Regardless, it's pretty neat.
Love that bi-color too.

That is really interesting! I have never seen such fused scape in my garden.

I get a few every year, I have a wide flat scape that looks like at least four fused together on 'Larry's Obsession' that one however is a short scape. That plant has been a little wonky since I got it, it has not grown well at all, and just seems to have some problem. It is one I actually bought here in my town, so I thought it would be acclimated to the climate.

Larry, did all the buds on such fused scape open well? Or did they produce some deformed buds?

In the past the buds were all developed well, the problem is that on some of them there were so many buds so close together the blooms could not fully open.

I was out resting after cutting the back grass and walked over to the seedlings, I was actually looking to see if anything yet was showing any sign of sculpted relief. I did not see a thing showing relief, however I did at least find a bloom showing some pleated sculpting to a degree, not exactly what I am going for, but I guess you could say it is a step forward.

Some nice blooms! Stan, a dark eye and edge always grabs my attention and that seedling is pretty. Too bad the scape is lacking.

Larry, I think I have only seen one fused scape before and can't remember what it was on. That sure is a lot of blooms together though. Maybe you should de-bud some of them so the others will open? I know, we don't even want to think about that!

Pretty pleated Larry. It's not unusual to find pleats with relief crosses. You may see any of the 3 sub-forms, pleats, relief, cristate, when crossing with Sculpted forms. One interesting thing I've noticed is out of thousands of sculpted cross seedlings over the years only 2 times have I seen a double bloom. I find more occasional double blooms on the registered single forms in the garden.

Loving the patterns, Fred! Form on this last one is pretty too. Just slightly involute petals, frames the watermark without covering it up. Thumbs up

@Char,
Did you take photos?
A sculpted relief double reminds me of the adds on TV with the half motorcycle and half man talking about having legs. I can't visualize how a double would be able to show the relief.
I found one 100 Per cent double registered as being sculpted relief: 'My Guru' (Bigalow-Glockson, 2014
I could not see it.

I had to look up the term involuted petals! Now that I know what it is I can see how nice that works on Fred's bloom.

I've only got one image, this one is Feel the Thunder X ( relief sdlg x non relief sdlg) complicated sdlg line but the relief sdlg was from a kid of the Bas Relief X Coquina Key sdlg. If that makes sense Smiling The line has pleating and relief. It only had the one bloom with one petaloid stamen. I moved it after it bloomed in 2018 and it didn't bloom last year, hard on the first time bloomers to move them in Oct in Vermont, so no idea if it was just a one bloom fluke. I kept it because I found the color pleasing. we'll see what it does this year.
Thumb of 2020-04-24/Char/8f412a

If I remember right the other was a yellow relief, nothing special and only had the one double bloom.

Way back 2002, Pat Stamile registered Fifth Dimension.

It has an interesting line going back to Kathleen Salter.

(Wow, the was a fun trip thru the Wayback Machine to find Pat's webpage with Fifth Dimension!) My catalogs are in the bookcase covered in plastic sheeting because the chicks are in that room.
There's 2 images in our database, the pink with cristation doesn't look correct to me. This one looks right.
