Oh I see.
I read "rough shield" as if rough was part of the name of the thing.
But you were saying it looked roughly like a shield.
And it does.
And roughly like a wreath, too.

Sorry for your loss.
Grateful for his service.

critter, sorry if I was confusing. I did not know Josh Cullins. When he died, a DGer who used to work for his grandfather posted a prayer request. Things just sort of developed from there. But I am also grateful for his service. Lovey dubby

Pam, I too love that seedling.

I have hopes for a military bed in the future - and have been slowly collecting daylilies for it. But of course, Eyes Right Jones is one I lost over the winter, and Pearl Harbor that I ordered was sold out by the time the order was shipped and my money was refunded.

And so it goes..... But that is OK, because I just haven't figured out where I want that bed to be located yet. I would like to get moving on it this summer, but the spot needs to be perfect yanno? ~Jan

I'm a little late to the party, but what are some of your favorite garden/non-wimpy daylilies? It's so hard to tell with all these gorgeous pictures of blooms whether the plant as a whole would fit into a garden setting nicely.

I started getting into daylilies several years ago, but that was put on hold while my kids were young. Now that I sort of have a little time to garden again, I am hoping to get things back on track. My favorite daylily this year is one that is a random seedling or NOID. It's not particulary exciting, but it has matured into a stately clump and is blooming nicely. I have also enjoyed Lighthouse Peach Jewel, but most of my named cultivars really need to be relocated into more sun, not that there are many. I am drooling over Primal Scream. It just always seems to come up as a favorite on various threads. I also added Little Boy Bob to my want list, because that picture Juli @daylily posted is so gorgeous. I guess I tend to favor the orange ones! Big Grin

I like the idea of having daylilies near peonies for a succession of blooms. I've also had in mind planting daffodils around the daylilies, which I'm sure is pretty common knowledge for those that are not newbies like me.

A question... Does leaving the seed pod on the plant hinder the plant in any way? I dabbed some pollen here and there just as an experiment and I did get several pods developing. I don't want to prevent the plants from increasing in order to produce seeds, though.

I have been hybridizing for about 15 years and most plants it doesn't bother. You will get a plant once in awhile that will not bloom as well the following year if you set too many pods on it but most of the time I don't really notice anything really significant.

Primal Scream is an excellent daylily, it is one of my favorites as is Old King Cole, Abbot's Magic, Pastel Classic and American Revolution. Most of these are older daylilies and I could list a whole lot more of the older and inexpensive ones that do really well. As far as some of the newer ones, that I have, Heartbeat of Heaven is an excellent plant, as is Destined to See, Darla Anita, Evermore Lights, Galaxy Explosion, Maxfield Parrish, and Sexy Sally. I don't have any real new 2012 or 13 plants that I can evaluate or comment on at this time. I really like a daylily that looks very showy in a clump and stands out in the garden.

For me, these four increased the fastest and are the most attention-getting.

Oktoberfest and Sunset Bay are great stand-out oranges.

Cherokee Star and Dixie Land Band are really good reds: one is a bluish red, the other has browny-purple undertones.

I have not managed to get my hands on a piece yet, but Ellen Laprise introduced FLAMING FLAMINGO, and I think it is one of the best oranges I have seen. Not sure if it makes huge clumps though. I did see a huge clump of Gossard's HEAVENLY DRAGON FIRE, which I also think is great, but when the flowers are compared side to side, I think Flaming Flamingo has clearer, brighter color. My favorite orange that I grow is Hanson's TEN CENT WINGS, but it blooms right over the foliage.

Primal Scream is an awesome daylily, but it didn't start to take off until I moved it to a different bed earlier this summer. My only complaint with it is that I just can't get a decent photo of that glowing orange color. It is one of my favorite daylilies.

I also love Wineberry Candy, it too is putting on quite a show this year and has been blooming for a month. Holly Dancer just started blooming now, and is quite happy and a beautiful red.

It seems to take my daylilies 2-3 years before they really explode on me with blooms. This year has been remarkable, the cooler temps and extended rainfalls have allowed my daylilies to grow taller and bloom more it seems.

Another thing to think about is bloom season - by purchasing daylilies that bloom at various times, it is possible to get 2-3 months of blooms

I planted peonies in the middle of my daylily bed not quite 2 years ago - I think when they mature I am going to be very happy with the combination. I also have tulips and daffodils planted right among my daylilies- they seem to do well for me so far.

I did find that mixing Iris with daylilies for the most part did not work out well for me. Daylilies like to be a tad wetter than iris do. I ended up digging everything up and planting them in different beds a couple of years ago and everything is much happier. It was good in theory, but reality wasn't so good. ~Jan

Hello Juli and all!
It's been some time since I've done much posting, putting in new gardens, working on the house and trying to pay the blls has all been keeping me occupied but I cannot resist my daylilies. I wanted to let Juli know that Flaming Flamingo does make a very nice clump and Juli, you're right about the color, it's a very saturated orange and that darker center color looks lacquered. I'm not a big fan of orange but I love this one also.
Flaming Flamingo

Below are a few others that have made a good presence in my northern garden
Margo Reed Indeed - a nice front of the border plant

Symphony of Praise - will always be in my garden, Such a lovely pink and it reblooms here

Curt's Catastrophe Waitress is a blooming machine and I found it increased quite quickly. I love the coloring and the texture

When I have mixed daylilies in my perennial gardens I like to make sure that I have some taller ones and one that is dear to my heart is another by Ellen Laprise, Isabelle Rose. Such grace and beauty in a plant, I love every bloom!

Karin, great pictures! Hurray! Hurray!

I love Curt's 'Catastrophe Waitress' thanks for sharing that. I would not have know is was a good bloomer because it is not listed as a rebloomer much less an extended bloomer like you say. It sure makes a beautiful clump!
