Great thread! I am always so interested in the animal world.

Did you know that wolves can maintain a speed of up to 40 MPH for twenty minutes when chasing prey? Even though their prey can run faster than them, the wolves catch up because the prey can only maintain a fast speed for a few minutes.

Interesting facts, both of you.

Pam, @gardenglory, have you seen the videos of pufferfish escaping eels and other predators? It looks so hilarious and cute, but I believe their spikes are poisonous, so I wouldn't want a pufferfish near me in the ocean.

More great information. Hurray!

Did you know that a female octopus dies shortly after her eggs hatch? A male dies shortly after mating.
They have found that if the optic gland is removed, the octopus resumes feeding and lives a much longer life. It is starvation that kills them, because of a hormonal reaction from this gland that inactivates their digestive gland.

Life span varies with species, from 6 months to 5 years.

Another one:

Wolves can jump across a span of 16.4 feet in length when running at top speed.

Here is one for you Johannian.

The Amazing Senses of Wolves

As we all know, the wolves' sense of smell is so much greater than ours – over 100 times greater. When wolves pant, they have 14 times greater reception of smell than us. The wolf can smell prey up to 1.75 miles away. It is believed that they can even determine the age and gender of other wolves from that distance. This helps them avoid other wolves and predators. Their hearing is 16 times better than ours. They can hear about 6 miles away in a forest and 10 miles away in open terrain. Wolves can hear between 25 kHz and 80 kHz whereas we humans can only hear from 20 Hz to 20 kHz.

Wow! So much info! Thanks a ton Bob.

I also really like the teamwork in a pack of wolves. In one of my wolf books, there was a section about the pack, and one part of that section showed a soaked adult wolf that was lying down in the snow, with a bunch of other adult wolves licking it. It looked like it was dead, but what had happened was it had fallen into a stream, and the other wolves in the pack had just recently pulled it out. You could see the alpha male welcoming it back as well, which was cool.

Another cool thing about wolves is how they act around the alphas. When they are around either of the alphas (whether the male or the female) they are not allowed to hold their head higher, they are not allowed to have their fur standing up (it has to be flattened), and they always have to lick or rub against the chin of the alpha they are around, as a sign of respect.

There are no upper front teeth in the goat's mouth. I never knew this until I got goats!

Basically yes...it's a hard ridge but no actual teeth. They have bottom teeth and teeth in the back on top.
They forage for leaves and grasses and don't need them. The teeth in the back are used for actual chewing.

A cat's meow is a form of communication with humans only, not other cats

Cats, our furry friends who love to spend their time lounging beside us… or on top of us, but have you noticed that they always meow around us? Well, this is a form of communication, but only between cats and humans. You won't see our feline friends using the same form of contact with another cat, apart from kittens to their mothers. Cats also connect their heads with humans to let them know they feel safe.

Wow, interesting! Now that I think of it Bob, I've never heard Honey (our cat) meow except around us (she was feral with a dead mother, so we didn't hear her meow to her mother either).

I remember reading that Bob about cats after I googled why my cat never meowed. He very rarely meows unless he is stuck somewhere and even at that it is barely audible. Every once in a blue moon he will meow if I have to pick him up to move him.

so cows have no upper front teeth? Yup, I googled, you can see images. Wow. I assumed their teeth were like horses.

Ronnie having goats is an " interesting animal fact" to me, haha. I didn't know you had goats, Ronnie

I'm amazed at how flies, vultures and other things find their (disgusting) meals by smell. Of course, we know dogs sense of smell is incredible too.
Plant it and they will come.
