So weird!

downright bizarre

"There are just three exceptions that we know of: humans, short-finned pilot whales, and killer whales. In all three species, females lose the ability to have children, but continue living for decades after. That's menopause. " source- National Geographic and BBC

I knew that about killer whales, but I didn't know that about short-finned whales. Very interesting! I also heard that the female killer whales always live longer than the males (except for rare exceptions).

This has been a great subject , having fun while learning something.
Here is another one I did not know - some snails have hair on there shell.

While it's not a secret that snails have shells, you probably didn't know that some actually have hairy shells. These hairs are rather handy to have, as they help a snail stick to wet surfaces like leaves.

Most of you probably already know this, but a snake uses its tongue to detect prey, threat, and other things from particles in the air.

But the question is how many koala's are going through a crime scene? There is also ridge detail on the human foot.

Snails are hermaphrodite, carry both male and female reproductive parts.

Some restaurants serve snail caviar.
It may sound like another one for unlikely snail facts, but snail eggs are actually considered a gourmet delicacy in some places. Measuring 3-6mm in diameter, snail caviar has been described as crunchier than fish caviar, tasting more like baked mushroom.

Some slugs can be predators by eating snails & other slugs, worms, maggots and other insect larvae that are harmful to garden and flower bed plants.

One of the Starlings favorite foods in the spring is slugs.

Lynn, I've heard of people eating snails. Like you said, it's supposedly great to lots of people, but I'm skipping that block in the chef world. Blinking

Ok, this isn't an animal fun fact, but an amazing fact:
There are more species of fungi in the jungle than there are plants (not even just species of plants), outweighing plants 33 to 1.

Lol Ronnie!

I remember something about hypnotizing chickens as well. You hold them down on the ground, place a stick in front of their eyes, and pull the stick back. Pull it back for a little bit, then lift it up. The chicken will literally just stare at the point where the stick left the ground, for a long time. Don't know why Shrug!

Just read a piece in the NY Times about electric Volta's eels that form packs in shallow water and swim in ever tighter circles to force small fish into a tight mass. Then they turn on the juice and the shocked fish rise to the surface, where the eels gobble them up. Evidently that's more efficient than individual eels chasing down tiny fish. Group hunting has been observed in fish only on rare occasions. Whales and other marine mammals seem to hunt in groups more often.

In a small boat on Sitka Sound, Alaska, I watched humpback whales swim in circles, blowing bubbles. The bubbles create a visual barrier that confines prey fish, such as herring. As they crowd closer, the humpbacks charge to the surface, jaws wide, and gulp them down.

You do not want to be inside a bubble ring when the whales surface: like being hit by several buses. I was in a small inflatable kayak, and paddled madly out of several bubble rings before the whales breached, close enough to splash me.

A friend of ours did it with his chickens. It was so funny! Maybe some breeds do it and some don't?
