Nice Miltassia bloom, Lindsey.

regarding the 'White Lightning' - I bought the plant last year from Hausermann's after being really smitten by the gorgeous photos of Cattleya Bob Betts posted on OSF. My plant arrived in such bad shape I was ready to cry. The plant was in spike but so poorly packed that most were broken along with quite a few leaves. I figured the plant will surely put out new growth the next season ( which it did) so I didn't bother telling Hausermann. They surely would have replaced the plant, but were was I going to put it....

Elaine, No there is no fragrance (that I can smell anyway!) I wonder how they come up with some of these names?

Lindsey, here are two pics of Lc. Mari's Song '217' HCC/AOS. The first pic is the one I obtained from the grower and this pic is attached to my six seedlings of this variety. They will not bloom for at least another year and perhaps two years, so I have never seen one of my Mari's Song bloom. The second pic was obtained from "Google Image" and is from another source (not the grower I bought the seedlings from). Your flower is gorgeous, just different than what I expected to see when mine bloom. Ken

Could be, Bree, but the Orange Nugget has decidedly more orange in the petals and lip. Ken

Another case of first generation seedling being registered? Just because they came out of the same flask, it doesn't mean they'll all look the same.

Hey, Carol. Aren't these tissue-cultured plants we are talking about?

I don't know, but from what I 've read, those are notorious for varietability. ( Is that a word?)

Hi guys,
I just pulled an earlier picture from this spring/summer blooming cycle and the same plant with the new flower taken the other day
Thumb of 2012-11-24/sugarcane/c49fee Thumb of 2012-11-24/sugarcane/e90637
maybe the colors change as the flower matures? maybe a different color from the cooler spring/summer bloom while the plant was outside?
The greenhouse stays around 60-65 at night but sometimes gets to the high 90's during the day. I'll take more pictures to see if the color
changes as the flower matures.

That amount of color change is interesting, maroon to magenta and lavender to yellow. I love both of them. Perhaps when my "baby" plants bloom I will see the same thing happen. Ken

Carol, I love your Miltonia...and the Encyclia is pretty too..I'm not familiar with that family, how large are those flowers?
Ken, looking at my 2 photos I'm now wondering if the fact that the one on the left was taken on an overcast day and
the one on the right in full sun.

Lindsey, what does your eyes tell you about the colors. Are the petals lavender or yellow? Since my plants have not bloomed, I am only going on what other grower's pics look like. Ken

Ken, sometimes I can't 'see' in the normal sense..like when I look in the mirror to see if
this outfit makes me look fat...I have to take a picture and look at the picture to 'see' it.
Crazy, I know!
But here's some pictures from today. The plant has 2 spikes that have bloomed about a
week apart, and I can see a distinct difference in the 2 spikes..the more yellow one is the
most recent to open.

Coming back from our place in Pennsy, the hunters are now in charge for the next few days. Looking forwards to my Venison... Smiling

Staying out of the Mari's Song discussion, since I am pretty clueless on this one.

Carol, I love your posts! Lovey dubby 'Hombre' is very pretty. Is it fragrant, as many of the Miltoniopsis are? The Coelogyne is gorgeous!

Yes, Ursula. Hombre is fragrant, and opening slowly in the house so I'll be able to enjoy it for quite a while.

Wonder if Mari's Song is one of those that change color as the flowers mature? Maybe the yellow fades out and is replaced by the lavender, that kind of looks like what's happening to me. Show us another picture in a couple of days, Lindsay?

Meantime, have you tried the scent on your Miltassia in the evenings? Maybe it's a night-scented one like my Brassavolas? There's just gotta be a reason they called it "Tropical Fragrance".

Our sympathies on the travel trauma, Jim! I sure can relate. We can't wait to see what has opened in the OC while you were gone.

I am covering up my tender babies tonight, it's supposed to get pretty chilly! 46 for a low tonight, 49 tomorrow night, then warming back up by Tuesday, Phew! Seems like fall was 'way too short this year.
