I'm usually not a fan of wannabe-black flowers, but that onyx odyssey is very striking. My noid hellebore has finally bloomed for me, along with a new white version (I suppose a seedling). Still waiting for the robins, and I had frost this morning, so can't claim spring yet. Even the frogs are late this year.

I want to live in a world where the chicken can cross the road without its motives being questioned.

Clint they should be doubles from seed . All the one from that series are seed varieties not tissue culture. Because of this not all will look like the pictures. Cotton Candy & Amber Gem are 2 other really nice ones. Check Mamajacks I think she has some leftovers from last years co-op.

Thanks for the info Bob. I got two of these at Lowes and they are full of blooms. It was good to pick through them and find the ones I thought looked the best.

I wish the Lowe's around here carried the plants they seem to down by you. Just so you know if you try seeds they can take upwards of 18 months to germinate , and 3 years to produce their first flowers.

I was never a fan but recently have become very attracted to hellebores so I saw an ad on Craigs List where this gal was selling them along with several other "shade" plants, including alstromeria. I really wanted Alstromeria so I contacted her and sure enough, I bought my first Hellebore along with the Alstromeria!

But I was reading the thread and it said they resent being divided? Yikes! This pot I got didn't have a whole lot of dirt and there were like 5 shoots, mostly the standard purple but one white. I just planted part of it today and I had to literally take a shovel and cut it apart the roots were so intertwined. Did I do wrong? Will it recover?

And where are the best places to plant? Shade? Partial Shade? I probably should do some reading up on this since I know NOTHING about them! Any comments welcome.

BTW, I got them from Bonnie, in northern Atlanta. Friend of Sterling, in case anyone knows them from DG? Bonnie actually sent me over to Sterlings house to get more Alstromeria. Both very, very nice gals! So happy to meet fellow gardeners in my area too.

I have never divided mine so not sure on that. I see you are in Georgia, i'm in the Northwest, Washington state. I can plant mine out in part sun but we sure don't have sun like you guys do down south. I have mine planted in dappled sun, under trees. Mostly under deciduous trees so they get the sun in the winter and shade during the summer. They like a woodland like area.

This is a really good book, The Gardener's Guide to Growing Hellebores by Gaham Rice and Elizabeth Stragman. Tells you all about the different cultivars, some will take more sun. Maybe your Library will have a copy.

Thanks! I will check it out. I don't know the cultivars but Bonnie's were in shade or dappled light so I'm thinking that's what they need, ESPECIALLY down here in GA Big Grin

The ones I grow have solid green leaves that feel almost plastic. I see in Springcolors pics that hers is a dappled color. I like that. I would love to find some locally.

Can someone tell us more about how they reacted when divided. I have 2 large clumps that have been growing for over 5 yrs in one spot. I would love to spread them around but hate to make them stop blooming. When is the best time also?

Would it be better to take a few from one side and not disturd the entire clump?

Lovely, I am a plant rescue person, I love to find clearance perennials, it is a challenge to see if I can pull them thru. I have even rescued plants from husbands that mow things down.
