Do you mean Sir John Betjeman, Evey? I got mine at Garden Valley Ranch. Another new one this year is The Endeavour, which I bought from Regan's Nursery. It's bred for hot climates and won't even be sold in England. Can you imagine? It's hard to find on HMF too, because we naturally want to spell it "Endeavor," but that gets no results on HMF.

EDIT: Well, NUTS. This is what is written about Sharifa Asma on the David Austin site: "One of the most beautiful English Roses, but it can be damaged by very hot sun." Sooooo, no Sharifa for me. =(

Evey, I've always grown Sharifa in partial shade, even when I had her up north. Right now I've got her in a half whiskey barrel placed in the only shady spot I have. DH put it on a wheely thing and I can just move it when I want. So if you are looking for a rose to go in partial shade, with maybe 2-3 hours of good sun, then Sharifa may still be OK for you. It does well potted so that helps. I think it makes a lovely patio rose. It will get some BS, though, but shakes it off well. I don't spray much. Maybe if I sprayed it more I could avoid BS? Anyway, Chamblee's has it (that's where I got mine) so it must be able to take some heat--it sure does at my house (zone 8a)! It just slows down a bit in August. Oh, and it is one of those roses that likes it's fertilizer on schedule but since it is a bloom machine I don't mind.

I had Endeavour on order with Garden Valley but their supplier didn't send it so I had to order an alternate =(. David Austin USA is selling it, though, so maybe I will try for it in the fall.

Thanks for the info, Terri. I can happily take a chance on Sharifa via Chamblee's... that's much less expensive than purchasing via David Austin. I do have many spaces that a patio rose could go, so I'll take your suggestion on that. =)

Hi, Terri, and welcome! Love your roses, especially the SA and the Alnwick Rose. AR is on my list and now that I've read the exchange between you and Evey about SA, I may give her a shot too. I need a few roses that will thrive in some shade, like the LR above mentioned, which is not an English rose, but one I love. If you like thorns, you'll love Gertrude Jekyll!

Evey, I was just over on DG and saw your posting of Angel Face. Now, there's a rose that really shows some blue or is that an effect of your camera?

Angie, it shows blue seasonally... that's not just a camera effect. Sometimes it has more purple to the coloring and sometimes more blue. No matter what color it's exhibiting, it's a beautiful, divine-smelling rose!

Yes; it does get pretty large, but I keep pruning mine back to keep it in bounds for its space. It smells divine, though! Worth the thorns for the scent.
